I picked up a load from a regular customer (customer is actually a personal friend) when i picked up the load,he asked if i could return the next day to take another (better) load.I said i would be there. The customer called my company and advised dispatch of the issue. So i delivered the first load, then dead headed back to the customer for the second load only to find out that the company had given the load to another truck. I don't really have an issue with the load going to another truck (i really didn't want all those dead head miles anyway, this was a favor to the customer) my issue is that my company was well aware that i was heading back for the load, they were also aware that they had given the load away,...........I think they should have informed me of this so i could set up in a better area to get a load and not have wasted all that fuel.
What do all of you think?
Thank You,
TRUCKRNNR

P.S. this all just happened today,i went a few round with dispatch and even recieved a call from some higher ups in the company i am leased to. They claim to have known nothing about any special driver request (if this is the case i still believe they should have let me know). My friend thew customer was gone from work by the time i gotten there, and i was in such a bad mood i decided not to call him at home regarding work issues.I'll be in touch with him first thing in the morning to iron this out.I'm not upset with him in any way,I just want to know if my company is lying to me about the whole thing. In my eyes i got screwed by them (my company) not telling me the load was alrady covered,I just want to know if they are now lying to me on top of that.

If I was he, I would have called the company up and told them to send you or they don't get the load. But I wasn't there.

I agree with Greg. The customer, being a friend and having asked for you specifically, should have told the customer a specific truck had been requested and should be on the way. For that matter, the second job should have been set up the day before with the company with you assigned.

That, is precisely the reason I got away from being a contractor for anyone. They are extremely anal about allowing you/me to reach past the puppet stage of reaction. Myself, I expect my contractors to "help me help them" when the opportunity presents itself. Makes it a lot better for everyone, and to me, gives a person some feeling of contribution.

No doubt in my mind there was a lesson dealt out to you in this instance. Just the way the game is played. Don't want you stiring the soup, you might just put too much pepper in it.

Ok, for the future, this is my suggestion: If your company has you on QC, then QC determines the dispatch. A load is NOT a load unless it is QCed to you. Even with the request of a friend and a verbal okey dokey from dispatch, a load is not yours until you have a pro number to back it up, via QC, nextel, or however your company does it. This will keep any feelings from getting hurt.

Sounds like dispatch failed to communicate. In their mind, if there was a truck close by it made more sense to cover the upcoming load with it rather than have you deadhead back. However, they should have told both parties what was going on, especially if the customer had requested you for the load to begin with. Not the first time a dispatcher has left a "t" uncrossed, and it won't be the last.

This sort of thing is what happens when computers take over. Programing could solve it but at a large cost, only to solve a one in a million request.

Before computers dispatchers would just put a note in your pigeon hole(if he wasen`t hung over)

When I was hauling expedite there was a company out of Little Rock that retreaded airplane tires and did something with the brakes. The reason this company used expedite wasn't for a time sensitive issue it was an exclusive use issue. Plus everything was hand load and unload which they assited in this. All the loads were round trip which made it even sweeter. Anyway I stumbled on this with a Little Rock to Toledo turn around once. They like me so well anytime they had a d unit run which was every other week they wanted me. It was awesome because they usually had good enough miles I could take it and then when I got back home I could take a day or two off. I did Little Rock to Seatach. Which is right between Seattle and Tacoma Washington a few times. San Diego quite often, Pheniox, and Vegas. I'd always unload there and then load some that had to go and be worked on. I'll close with this it's nice to know someone sees that you are doing a good job, and requests for you specificlly to handle a load for them. I was always very proud to haul those loads. Plus they paid like a 1.75 per mile to a d unit so my pay check made me proud to. The company I was leased to was proud,my owner was proud, my wife was proud, and by time they all got through being proud of my good job I think I had enough left over for a steak dinner at the truck stop. :+
