Many mcdonalds are owned by locals so would that not be supporting mom and pops. Only problem is there is no easy way to know if they are.

We use to frequent Mom & Pop restaurant as much as possible but realized the food wasn't all that fresh...I guess to make any type of a profit they had to keep selling an item until it was gone.

If there's a Mom & Pop restaurant around my home that's got good food then that's where I'll eat but being out on the road I'll pass on Mom & Pops.

I want to thank McD`s for breaking me of the fast food habit. I am old enough to remember when the burgers were served hot direct off the grill. (well maybe 75 per cent of the time). They were addictive.
Then the drive through came along, and the burgers started being held in drawers served luke warm at best.
Forget the fries served limp and cold. FORGET IT! Thanks I`m gone!!!!

The easiest way to find out is just ask any employee. They'll know if they work for a franchise owner or for McOpCo. Also, nearly every McDonalds (and ALL McOpCo locations) will have a plaque indicating if it's corporate owned or a franchise, and the name of the franchise owner.

"Remodeling a McDonald's costs about $800,000, more than twice as expensive as the $300,000 rival Burger King (BKW -0.97%) charges its franchisees. It also tops the $375,000 Wendy's (WEN +0.31%) expects to charge for its least-expensive model, according to Bloomberg News"

---First step, ease up on all the expensive remodeling. I can't count the number of perfectly good MacDonald's that were leveled just to have a new one built

---Bad time to ask for that raise to $15 now I guess :p

I have two couples at my church that own hamburger joints. One owns 5 McDonalds and is ready to sell and retire. The other owns two non franchised burger joints that uses nothing but fresh hamburger meat that they pat and good fries and fresh buns shipped in daily and they aren't going to sell. Both have been in business about the same amount of years. Every chance I get I will eat at the fresh hamburger place and it's great. It's amazing how much different hamburgers can taste from two different places. And nothing beats fresh.
Also another place we ate at last Sunday is on hwy 25 in North Augusta SC coming out of Augusta Ga going into SC. Called BJ's. It's 6.99 all you can eat buffet, includes drinks and plenty of room for trucks to park in the back. Great food.

My sentiments exactly. Every time it seems like "sit time" I ask the locals for the good Mom and Pop restaurant in town. Most will always beat the fast food....but even these places have cut corners, and no longer a guarantee of good home cookin. I've begun to compile a list of those exceptions, for future visits, just like the hotels.

Not to spoil the burger fun, but Home Town pizza chain in KY has good stuff....and lunch buffet with real pizza, not the skimmed down versions found on most pizza buffets. What they bring out a plenty, is just like you would order from menu. Toppings and cheese are not skimped. Decent salad bar and the one in La Grange KY has cheesy potatoes which are excellent, along with steamed broccoli and cauliflower.

Gotta get those veggies in. :)

I watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and check the Web site, for locations that are in the places I go to. Never had a bad meal at any of those places.

Look them up by State

I have a friend who manages several Mcdonalds in New York city. Where I live Mcdonalds had a long ongoing promotion for combo's, A diffents one each day of the week at a special price. One day I asked him why you couldn't exchange what the combo of the day was for another combo if it wasn't to my liking. He proceeded to tell me how Mcdonalds Corp. dictates to their franchisees. They really are in control. They tell you what to do, and also what equipment you need to buy and when to upgrade. According to my friend it's ongoing debt for the franchise owner, and their contracts are ironclad.
