Why not get your eyesight tested first, just to be sure? If you can't pass, maybe a corrective lens would help. Your T-300 probably has air brakes and that would require a CDL. Also, many carriers require a CDL regardless of GVWR.

In Ohio, as long as its under 26k, even if it has air brakes, you don't need a CDL. When I first started in a straight truck, I thought the same, but looked up the rules, here is the link:

ODPS | BMV | Frequently Asked Questions

I don't know if it will come up right, but you will see the question and if you click on it, will show you the answer.

What I have to wonder, is the CDL eye test any different than the regular drivers eye test? Also you will still need a medical card, you might fail that test depending on how bad that eye is.

Not sure about how you would de rate. A truck just marking I gvw 26000 would get you pulled in every scale they go by door markings and dot can spot a 33000 a mile away

i have been going to drs they said i might get lucky and pass but count on not passing.A cdl requires 20/40 in each eye a. regular license requires 20/40 with both eyes together.i cane do that air brakes dont require a cdl i never haul over 5 or6000 lbs i run with a 26000lbs plate now. i need to change the sticker on the door.

You're too focused on CDL or not, and getting your vehicle down below 26,001 so that you don't have to have a CDL.

However, CDL or not, if your vehicle is over 10,000 pounds you will need a valid medical card. And it's the same medical examination that you get when you have a CDL.

I did that once with an international 4900. It was a 33000 gvw from the factory.I was running dedicated race car tire loads in the early 90's..I thought the same thing.. I ony haul around 5 thousand pounds, so why be plated heavy and have an apportioned plate if I don't need it?...lets put it this way..I got pulled over in ohio, my home state, lets put it this way..5 tickets for me doing this, and I am still walking funny..tried to fight them..lawyer said just pay them, they got you with you're pants down..

thats the one im talking about. at least when i have had dot checks thats the one they look at

And DOT also goes by the VIN # when checking the Factory GVWR's of trucks they might have a question about.......

We had an Idiot over on the HotShot Boards (McGhoo over on the truckersreport board) that ran an F350 Dually with a 12,200 GVWR who changed the Door Plate out with a Door Plate from an F350 SRW that only showed a 9900 GVWR. He got put OOS for sleeping in a CMV over 10K lbs......Fighting the OOS in court he tried to show the Judge that his Truck only had a 9900 GVWR, and the when the Judge asked the Trooper about the 12,200 GVWR....The Trooper showed the Print-Out of the Deciphered VIN........He made McGoo look like the horses hoof he was in Court.....

It ain't worth the trouble. Just plate it the same as the door sticker. Save yourself a lot of trouble in the long run.

As I understand it (I could be wrong) you need the medical card on anything over 10K, same as logs and all the rest of the DOT stuff. Some companies make you get the DOT medical even under 10K, the rule with those companies is that if it's motorized you need the DOT physical to drive for them.

So-- again, as I understand it at this time-- de-rating your 33K truck to under 26K won't help you on the DOT physical-- you still have that to do by law if your vehicle is over 10K. I doubt seriously that there's a lot you can do to convince the nice officer that your heavy straight/TT is under 10K.

You don't need a dot physical if you don't have a cdl. But your company may want one for insurance sake. That's the reason most of the bigger companies make there cargo van drivers get one.

I'm not so sure. I remember driving for a local courier, anything under 10K you didn't need a DOT physical-- but the safety director would have a cow if you had a vehicle over 10K and you didn't have the card. It may have been insurance-- I understood it was the law. If you don't need the DOT physical until you get to CDL territory, I could have had a "Pesky Penske" with the correct GVWR a long time ago.

You do need a DOT physical for any thing over 10,000 GVW CDL or not.

If you can pass that, why are you wanting you de-rate your vehicle to less-than 26,001 pounds?

If your vehicle weighs, or has a GVW Rating of more than 10,000 pounds, it is a CMV. In order to drive a CMV you must have a valid DOT medical certificate.
