Greenhouse gases hit record high

This subject is always fun on EO :p

Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere hit a new record high in 2011, the World Meteorological Organization has said.

In its annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin released on Tuesday, the organisation said that carbon dioxide levels reached 391 parts per million in 2011.

The report estimates that carbon dioxide accounts for 85% of the "radiative forcing" that leads to global temperature rises.

Other potent greenhouse gases such as methane also reached record highs.

The carbon dioxide levels appear to have been rising at a level of two parts per million each year for the last 10 years - with the latest measure being 40% higher than those at the start of the industrial revolution.

The WMO estimates that 375 billion tonnes of carbon have been released into the atmosphere since 1750, and that about half of that amount is still present in the atmosphere.

"These billions of tonnes of additional carbon dioxide in our atmosphere will remain there for centuries, causing our planet to warm further and impacting on all aspects of life on Earth," said WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud.

"Future emissions will only compound the situation."

US weather agency the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) contributed to the bulletin with their Annual Greenhouse Gas Index, which indicated that between 1990 and 2011, carbon dioxide's role in the radiative forcing that leads to warming had increased by 30%.

Levels of methane, a more potent greenhouse gas, hit a new record at 1,813 parts per billion - more than two-and-a-half times the pre-industrial level.

Concentrations of nitrous oxide, estimated to be nearly 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide, rose slightly to a record 324 parts per billion.

Mr Jarraud pointed out that until now, "carbon sinks" such as the oceans had reclaimed half of all atmospheric carbon dioxide, but that pattern would not necessarily continue.

"We have already seen that the oceans are becoming more acidic as a result of the carbon dioxide uptake, with potential repercussions for the underwater food chain and coral reefs," he said.

"There are many additional interactions between greenhouse gases, Earth's biosphere and oceans, and we need to boost our monitoring capability and scientific knowledge in order to better understand these."

Record high? Based on what? How long have they been keeping records? Can their figures be trusted? Sounds like more BS to me.

Nope, it won't. Unless the records go back AT LEAST 120 million years and those writing it are NOT from the UN, a European left wing government, the US government or ANY "environmental group" MAYBE they would be WORTH something.

It's all slight of hand, snake oil garbage to me. The "global worming", climate change dudes have zero credibility. NOTHING they have said has yet to happen when they said it would and they have been caught in FAR too many lies. They also NEVER mention just how much things are CLEANER than they have been and continue to improve.

It is, in other words, a pile of manure.

Morning to you too! :D

If not an environmental group ... then who should be doing the testing and reporting

I'm confident that they have ways to look at the past/history .... via geology etc

I am not confident of ANYTHING that they say. They are a joke and lie more than Obama does! Just like the BBC said, back in 1981 when I was still in England, that Washington DC was going to be under 4' of water by the year 2000 due to global warming, did not happen, too bad, it would have been a GOOD thing!

Do you believe that there is/has been any environmental changes?

Who should be conducting the testing and resulting?

There has NEVER been a time in history when there have NOT been environmental changes. It is NORMAL, has ALWAYS happened and will ALWAYS happen. The rest is just nothing but smoke and mirrors to steal our money and destroy our freedom.

Well you know I can't believe that LOL.

Also, did you realise that your caps lock is sticking occasionally?

No no we're not polluting the air...all the chemicals factories and cars are dishing into the air they're good for us and mother earth. Record levels of Carbon Dioxide...pfffttt we'll just stop breathing oxygen and start breathing carbon dioxide, it's simple really! Besides I prefer warmer climates...so bring it on!
(Yes this is sarcasm, not everyone may get that!)

What polution man causes does not begin to compare to that of a strong volcano. They can make all the greenhouse gas laws they want and it will not change anything.

Ah but ...... LOL

A volcano didn't have to compete with 'man' back in the day

Well, SOMETHING dried up the TWO oceans that left their salt behind, right under where we live. One is 900' below and the one my Dad mined was 1100' under the surface. Not to mention the Great Salt Lake, it's been drying up LONG before Man caused any problems.

The entire keyboard is a mess. Too much coffee spilled in it.

OH YEAH, what caused the perma-frost to melt 10,000 years ago? Monsanto?

This has ALL happened before. Bet this drought will end sometime soon and then the area will flood, just like it did two years ago.

NAW! The Great Lakes are in a low cycle, likely for several years. Not as low as some have been in the past, but low. SO THERE! You won't need it unless Lake Erie decides to mess with tradition.

Then you are likely safe for a decade or so. ANYTIME you want a FIRST HAND account of Lake Erie water levels, let me know. I can introduce you to people who can contradict most of what the "Climate Change" goobers say. They LIVED where the others say that man NEVER did. BUT what the hey, what good is first hand information? LOL!!! :p
