I just changed from a Tom Tom to a Garmin unit. The Garmin is so much better than the Tom Tom that it's not funny. I haven't seen enough of the Rand McNally units to know much about them.

I changed from a Garmin to a Rand McNally. I prefer the Rand McNally and have less problems with it than I did with Garmi.

Hi patjan026,

I use the Magellan brand gps's. I bought them before I got into vanning so they work ok with vans, but I don't have any vehicle size considerations to worry about.

If you are running a ST or bigger, you may want to zero in on the gps's that have features for big trucks in order to keep you off of the "No Truck" roads.

I started driving before GPS's for navigation hit the market, so when I drive, it's usually the detours and the last few miles and turns that I listen to the "RoadB.tch"(My nickname for the GPS), she's so rude, she just starts talking no matter what else is going on...:)

For me, it came down to updates and the costs associated with that.
How easy was it for me to glance, not stare, at the screen and understand what I needed to do to safely get maneuvered.
Accuracy of waypoints/locations (Still off by as much as 1/3 mile in some cases, after big earthquakes that create earth wobbles), hopefully (Usually), the updates can correct this.
And the last was the cost and size of the display unit and does it give understandable voice directions. Your gps will be competing with road noise.

I haven't had a need to keep up with the market on these, so there might be some pretty spiffy units out there. The main thing to keep in mind is that it needs to fit into your driving habits/routine so that it assists you rather than distracts you.

Just bought a new Rand McNally 5" screen commercial GPS. So far so good. Was freezing up when I first turned it on but worked good last night. I think it was getting the kinks out.

I'm using the garmin nuvi 465. Nothing fancy but it does the job. You put in your length, height and weight and it will keep you off roads with a restriction.

Im curious on how that gps is working out for you?

First unit I returned cause it kept freezing up...second unit ok..except tonight I was driving through Harrisburg, PA got to a road incident, hit the Detour button and got routed to another incident. Guess I can't win sometimes! Lol
