Ok the Garmin 5000 is out. They are on e-bay new for around $220, I reviews of it on the web and it seems the biggest issue is that it does not have a battery backup so you can't use it as a handheld unit, no problem for me, i can usually find my way to the front door of the "J".......

I like the 5 inch screen idea and the fact that it is set for trucks also........anyone using one yet???

Well we have The Magellan. It's been great for us. We also have Pro Miles on the laptop, and sometimes we run them both, especially if "Maggie's" routing is miles off what the Carrier said. I do agree she tends to add miles, doesn't do truck specific routing, but she has always gotten us there. When we run Pro Miles, and follow it's route, Maggie yes, she says at your earliest oppourtunity makee a U-Turn, but, she does eventually get with the program. So there is a new truck specific coming out GPS... interesting, talked to a fellow the other night his Tom-Tom couldn't find Flint, MI. decisions, decisions.

If you read carefully, only thing the Garmin 5000 would make it more trucker friendly is with route planning, you can save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the 5000's wide screen, a trip log provides an electronic breadcrumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map, and its 3-D digital elevation map view gives you fair warning of grade changes.

Other than that, its the same as all other GPS systems.

I posted the link to this specific GPS Garmin is coming out with and its the only true Trucker GPS Garmin has. And do believe Tempest if posted about the thread saying something about it. But, I guess nobody clicks on links and rather just read whats in the thread and ignore any other information you could follow up on, I will give you some details about the Garmin 465T that truly makes it a trucker GPS system.

Ease your way down the highway with the nüvi 465T – our first nüvi designed specifically for the over-the-road trucking industry. Featuring a preloaded NTTS Breakdown Directory, specialized routing options throughout the lower 48 states and truck friendly points of interest, this full-featured navigator was made for life on the road. The nüvi 465T also lets you create custom vehicle profiles tailored to what you’re driving and what you’re hauling. It’s convenience created with over-the-road drivers in mind.

The nüvi 465T is the first navigation device to provide locations in the National Truck and Trailer Services (NTTS) Breakdown Directory to its trucking-relevant points of interest. The NTTS Breakdown Directory is the most comprehensive guide to semi-truck repair facilities nationwide – including those offering 24-hour road service.

The nüvi 465T also comes standard with lane assist, which guides users to the right lane at the right time – especially helpful when navigating complex highway interchanges.

With detailed maps providing turn-by-turn directions that call out streets by name, the nüvi 465T provides specialized routing to support truck-related restrictions (customizable by height, weight, length, width and hazardous materials). Simply enter dimensions and load restrictions and nüvi 465T guides you according to your requirements. You can even enter multiple-point routing so that you can take a more efficient route between multiple stops along your trip.

Know what lies in your path with the nüvi 465T. It displays warning information of upcoming road conditions to make drivers aware of possible hazards along the route such as sharp curves and steep grades. You’ll also get lateral wind warnings and notification when the road narrows. It’s the safe way to travel down the highway.

Put traffic jams behind you with nüvi 465T's integrated FM traffic receiver. Receive free alerts about traffic delays and road construction that lie ahead on your route. Simply touch nüvi's screen to view traffic details or detour around the problem area.

There is more about the GPS system, but what I have copied and pasted is the most important details that makes the difference being on the road.

I have tried many and will buy garmin from now on until someone builds something better. Many of the garmin comments here seem to be from the nuvi 200 series (the cheap one) and before any undies get twisted i did say most, not all!! I had telenav on my phone and loved it, but no signal equals no gps so I moved on. Like Turtle said, the first one you learn will tend to be your favorite (my sis still uses my old streetpilot c330). $500 is high but with garmin I usually get what I pay for, unlike so many others on the market. Mental, I guess it just boils down to leading a horse to water....

Yep, when I tried Garmin and returned it to get another TomTom it was because I liked
the layout of TomTom better than that of Garmin.
One difference I did find that was better on the TomTom is the speaker. It didnt distort
at the volumes needed on a truck
I would think that Garmin addressed this issue on its newer models.

If the the new Garmin 465t is any good at all routing for trucks, I will probably switch
unless TomTom comes out with their own truck friendly gps.

I will wait for until fall when some who have used the new garmin give reviews.

Ya, I'm like you. I'm comfortable with TomTom Gps systems. We started out with the TomTom One 3rd Edition. We used that for about 1 1/2 years and recently bought the TomTom 730 Go.

I heard at one brief moment that TomTom was looking into making one for professional drivers, but haven't heard about since. I'm waiting to hear raving reviews about the Garmin nuvi 465T before I go out and buy it, since we already forked out $379 for this last one.

I've had the PC Miler Nav 430 for about 2 months now. I really like it. It took a while to get to learn all the different features.

But now that I have it set up right ... its great !!

Now I see the Garmin Nuvi 465t will be available in about 5 weeks at GoTruckStop.com.

I have a freind that likes my Nav 430 ... I just might sell it to him and get the new Garmin.

well, I went and did it ...

I went to GoTruckStop.com and ordered a Garmin 465t !!

My buddy said he wants my Nav 430 when the new one comes in.

Can't wait. They said it should be available in a few weeks.

If the demand is going to be like the Nav 430, glad I got my order in early.
