Government waste or American industriousness?

Look here. The other day I picked up from a Federal Prison. Prison. The joint. The can. The inside. No matter what you call it, it's a prison. I took that load of military clothing (uniforms) to Virginia Beach. While in Virginia Beach I dropped it at a warehouse. Inside the warehouse, I could see people taking military clothing out of boxes, and putting them into boxes with their own company's logo. After re-packaging, they would turn around and sell them to the DoD.

Recap. Made in prison by prisoners housed by the Bureau of Prisons. Sold to third party. Re-sold to the US Military.

Someone needs to check the process.

Ah... but look how many jobs the local congressman can claim were created by that company repackaging prison labor.

It's not about really saving money, it's about that report, what looks good on the news.

Just curious,,How do ya know where or who they are selling em to..Ive dropped a few times at what maybe the same place your talking about. But never came close to seeing where the freght goes after it is repacked..

Why check the process? The way I see it is,,,Your truck got a load and thats what counts..We cant change the process.ya got work out of it didnt ya??:D

I got work for it, but seems like I'm over-working because someone doesn't know how to check their work. Sell that to me, and I'll sell it back at a profit.

The guy on the dock said it was direct to military. And the boxes they re-packed said Army issue.

Look I would rather have the prison system in this country supply the military with some questionable practices than to have the military supplied by a foreign company.

If you look at some of the equipment that is used by the military - made in India and made in China can be found.

I didn't say anything about the prisoners making the uniforms. And I don't have a problem with that, either. What I'm saying is that the government is selling to an outside company that's selling it to the government. You don't see the issue with that?

I don't and here is why.

If the prison has been contracted to make a uniform top for say the navy, then the contractor is the one who has to go through the entire approval process to be a vendor then go through the bidding process to secure the contract. If the contractor needs to have say 500,000 tops done by November but they have only one manufacture that can provide 300,000 tops, the prison may be the best choice to fill in the gap.

Im thinking (and keep in mind its only me thinking) but most of this kind of stuff is private industry operating in the prisons.
Cheap labor? Properly and maybe somewhere, somehow a state governor makes something out of the deal??? I have no way of following the money, just glad freight going on our trucks.

Prisons do provide cheap labor. And that's a brilliant idea. However, the name on the bill that accompanied the freight pretty much had Federal government in the name. You tell me.

Federal Prison Industries.

I'm grateful for the freight. But scared at the same time of more government waste. Why not take the uniforms from the prison right to military?

I dont know Bro, Ive given up even trying to understand Gov waste years ago.Ive come to the conclusion I cant do anything about it anymore. Noone is going to listen to me.

As far as why not ship direct,,
Maybe ya had 7 skids......Those 7 get broke down into 15 or more pallets and then sent out to 9 different places?????

dude, the waste is not there.

The waste is where we pay for a high cost of common items because of some classification system created to help someone selling it (the $1000 hammer) or better example is the waste from handing credit cards to federal employees who have no business accessing tax payer funds.

This seems to be more than just having one company contract with a prison and then selling it to the government, there are strict guidelines that are followed and disclosures of who made what and for how much.
