Gonna try it in a van.

I have previous o/o experience driving a c unit with 2 expediting companies, and have been out for 3 years now. I am thinking of putting a van out there in a month or two, and am curious about an average number of paid miles per day and week. Also am interested in the industry average of cents per loaded mile w fuel surcharge for a van. I am aware this is a slow time especially for vans but I believe this economy is starting on an upswing and it would be a good time to get running. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Mario: Your question is too vague for a finite answer. I doubt that anyone can tell you an industry average for expedite vans, either for miles or money.

As an experienced expediter you probably know that the revenue varies greatly between the lowest paying carrier to the best paying. Common is $.77 without FSC to $1.20 with FSC. I should think that a typical van runs 100,000 miles each year with about a third to a half of that being deadhead. You should expect that a van single or team will earn about single/$20,000 or team/$50,000 less than the C truck you drove. The FSC paid by many shippers is probably about 15%. Some pay it, some don't; it still depends on the contract the shipper has with a carrier. We find that the FSC has pretty much kept the fuel costs at an overall reasonable rate.

I suspect you have a pretty good idea with which carrier you'd like a lease. Send a PM or two to the moderators in the Recruiters Forum. Those folks are particlarly helpful.

good luck,

Terry

I appreciate your response, I know it is quite a bit more profitable in a larger unit, and I may go that route after year or two. I just wanted to get some figures so I can estimate some different scenarios. Thanks, Mario

Seems to me there isn't any commitment in this statement. Like so many others considering this business. Gonna "TRY IT", instead of "gonna "DO IT". There is a difference. From a fairly experienced Expediter and Carrier, I don't even open the gate for them when I hear that three letter word.

That is a very valid statement, be assured this will be given every effort. It is a business I have enjoyed, and profited from in the past and am ready to enjoy it again. Thanks for your point, it was well taken.

I would expect the low end in a van to be 77cpm plus an average of 10cpm fsc. I don't have direct information on companies paying a percentage but would expect the average annual comensation to be perhaps 10% more than a straight mileage system. The downside to a percentage system is the uncertainty from run to run compared to the stability of the mileage based system. Good luck with your decision.
