What miles are these 2 trans. getting before rebuilds are required? Would really like to hear about any tech. tips that have panned out. Teacel, are you out there still running vans?

First ford trans to go on me.. Went at 260K behind a power stroke, in a van that spent most of it's time in the hills of PA. The trans in my Escort died on a friend of mine last week at 92K..

700R4 in my old diesel suburban died at 165K, the 4L60E in my safari died at 462,000 miles of hard city driving.

I had an E4OD replaced/rebuilt twice in a 92 powerstroke and twice in a 96 powerstroke. My transmission probem light was flashing so much, I kept a piece of electrical type over it. This expense and that of a new diesel were part of the reason I switched over to a Chev.

HI

ON my 94 Ford the factory tranny made it 350,000 miles. Got it rebuilt by a tranny guy in Zanesville Ohio, and got 800,000 more out of it. When that one went in CND the day before Thanksgiving I had to get it rebuilt in CND. They called the guy in Zanesville to find out what he had done to it.He had drilled a relief hole in valve body and ran 2 ground straps, one from tranny to the body and one from tranny to the frame.

They say that there is to much heat under the hood on the 350 vans and this messes up the tranny wiring harness. Which sends wrong codes to computor which causes unusual wear in tranny {stays in 2cd gear to long or not long enough}.So in the summer I remove the tranny cooler and wash the fins with aluminam cleaner and flush it out with new tranny fluid. Make sure to straighten all the fins before you put it back on.

Best of luck

Put 367,000 miles on my 98 E250, 377,000 on my 2001 E250, and have 152,000 on my 2004 E350 and have not spent a penny on any of the three transmissions. And when I say I haven't spent a penny I mean I haven't spent a penny. I have never changed the fluid or filter on any automatic transmission I have owned. I have hooked a tandem axle trailer behind all these and loaded up my 3600 lb antique tractor or threshing machine and pulled it through the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee going to tractor shows. Best thing you can do for an automatic transmission is leave it alone. Worst thing you can do is one of those $80.00 drain and flush ripoffs. That almost gaurantees a failure.
