The e-track is configured into the width because it is set at the same height as the flooring. That set up gives me 48" edge-to-edge.
Skids slid well on the wood. I also use two 4 x 4 foot sections of carpet turned upside down to help a two skid load slid in smoother and to protect the wood.
The carpet is also necessary when I load an occasional bin that has feet as the carpet keep the feet from catching on the e-track.
