Getting My Own Autority Questions

For those that have your own authority I have a pretty simple question. Did you do all the paperwork, etc yourself or did you hire a service that does that sort of thing for a living - like GLauthority.com or some of the others?
If one is to use one of those services who would you suggest?
Thanks guys (and gals).

I am in the process of doing my own. If you are so busy with a current work situation, then I would let someone else do it. The only thing is, you will still need to know all of the ins and outs in order to KEEP your authority. So either way, you still need to study all of the regs for it and not rely on someone else to get it right for you.

Are you back in the driver seat, or planning on putting others in the truck(s)? How's that arm doing anyways? Hope all is well.

i used ooida. they got the job done but left alot of loose ends that left me making 2 trips to the big house in harrisburg,pa to fix there mistakes..but i guess everybody makes mistakes. i would use an agency for the mc# but things like ifta,p.u.c#,ucr are easily gotten on your own without the extra fee's

Jefferson3000 - thanks for asking.
The arm is terrible to be honest. Having surgery on it and the shoulder right after Christmas.
At this point will not be driving again as the docs will only be doing a surgery to ease the pain - so brokering I go!
Doing that for another company now but will get my own authority shortly.

So is that to say you are looking at getting broker authority, or motor carrier authority? Sometimes within a circle of professionals, people will just call it "authority", but they are definitely different animals.

Getting my own broker authority for now. Just don't want the financial risk of anything more than that at this time. Love doing waht I am doing (brokering for a company now) but really want my own brokering authority.
Are there any other companies out there to consider when it comes to assisting with all that paper work when first filing.

There are broker schools that will train you AND help certify you. I don't envy you as broker. The margin of profit is generally very slim and you will need working capital as you will need to pay the carrier sooner than you receive payment for your services many times.

I'm no expert, but I do play one on TV. :)
I did briefly look into it myself though.

I have had on-the-job training and have weekly training sessions and daily supervision with the firm I am now with - so that has been great!
And the profit margin is generally 15-18% on some runs. I got a call on Sunday from a company that needed to move a large printing press from Ohio to Colorado.
1200 miles for the carrier at $3.00 per mile for the carrier. The customer was billed $5,000. My profit $1,400 - which of course is not typical but it was nice. Even though the guy did call during my Colts football game. (Should have billed him more for that!)

28% profit, nice piece of change! Who paid the rigging company to load it? Was this an OD load? Escort service? What about the other end? Or do you just line up the truck.

Boy are you in LaLa land.

Your truck will want paid in 10 days your customer will pay you in 30 days or so, if you broker one 1k load a day you'll have 20k or better out the door, before you even get a sniff.

Whatcha tink??

That's why I didn't get into that game when I had to get out of the truck. I didn't have the capital to back me up. And once the trucks go awhile without getting paid your credit rating will get bad, and no one will want to haul for you. Or at least I would think.

Moot - no escort service required by law on this load (close but still good),also client paid for the rigging company to load it and unload it!
Colonel, sir - no I am not in LaLa land. Sure the truck wants paid in 10 or 15 days I understand that. I understand the customer may not pay till sometime around 30-days, ##### some will even drag it out.
Starting out, the only clients that get credit with me are those that have a solid credit rating. I will match that load up with a carrier that can work within my payment terms - if not I move to the next carrier or I will simply add a few %-points into my quote and factor the load out.
I will continue this route until there is a solid cash flow available. I have established a credit line at this time but I do not want to tap into it if I do not have to.
I have a quite partner in this venture that is very business savy and he only gets a cut if I have to 'tap' into the credit line.

You know after a lot of time looking into this, I found it rather a pain in the a** to get into.

I choose to go into customs brokerage which was put on hold for a while and which seems to be more lucrative than this but a bigger pain in the a** to get into - not for everyone and highly regulated.

Well as some one mentioned in another thread, you got to have 6 months operating capital to really insure your stability in this industry, can not say this about expediting but I can say it about a business where transactions take place as part of the business. Regardless what your credit rating and reputation could be, it only takes a few times to get screwed on either end to lose customers and put you in the red.

greg-
I would agree, a few bad moves, a few bad procedures and it does not take long to go down the toilet.
With a credit line through my partner I do not feel we should have a cash flow problem, but you never know, the best financed and best backed can hit the wall and falter.
We will factor alot of our moves, thus preventing problems with carriers and a need to tap the credit line.
We have alot of work to do before even filing, we still want to find a company to handle the paper work for filing for us which was the whole point of this thread is to get some input on who to maybe use that people have used in the past.
I need to decide weather we just want to broker or to bring on o/ops and become a carrier as well, etc.
Do we want vans, reefers and flats or do we just want to go all out on the type of trucks we bring on.
I am tilting more to just being the broker business - less hassle less legal snuff less risk.
Then of course for marketing - we need a name! Gee, taht might seem easy but its all amount name, service and reputation!

Anybody else have experience with any of these authority services companies?
Please advise ASAP.

Just make sure they know what they're doing with broker authority. Some of them you see listed around these parts may just specialize in motor carrier authority.
