Generators

Anyone having this problem WEIGHT seems as though the new truck I have ordered might be over 33gvw with 13K of freight. Has not been a problem in the past on this model, but very close without the generators. Here we are trying to comply with these idle laws, then another branch of govt. slaps our hands. Any Suggestions?

broompilot, it looks like you will have to consider installing an aux. axle. see if you can get it included in the price of the truck, so you don't have to come up with a few thousand dollars right at the start. also you will find that you wont have to use it all that frquently, but it will help you by getting loads that a regular D unit will not be able to handle. DD.

Howdy, the extra axle is the only way out of this jam. The thing I would do if your finances can handle is to take delivery and then add axle to avoid paying excise tax which would add 12% to the purchase price of your truck. Do some price shopping on the axle and make sure you get one with shock absorber package as that is the only way to run in Canada. Good luck, the problem your having is a common one, you get all the equipment you need and add your personal stuff and the payload gets cut.

You are both right about installing the aux axle, did not plan on this expense at all. Had I not looked around I would have found this out the day I showed up to pick up the truck. Have contacted JA Jones, talked with a Larry Schrock price seems reasonable, and I do believe he said it was air ride I will now ask. I have discovered that you need to take delivery and than install, other wise the tax is 12% on the entire sale could add up to more than 12K. Install after delivery tax is less than $500. Am I in for any other suprises. Any comments on useage from current owners of tag axles would be appriciated, maintenance tips, tire size, and useage suggestions. I am greatfull for the education I have gained from EO.

Does FECC require you to have 13,000 available for freight? That seems a bit high, as my truck weighs 20,000 with 1/4 tank, and has a GVW of 32,000.

I like how Express-1 does it. For a D-unit you need a 20' box and 13k capacity, but they let me by.

I think most trucks push that 20k empty range nowadays as there are too many amenities. Like Broom said, generators are 300#, 100 gal tanks full are killer, and a bigger sleeper always factors in. If expediter companies are going to require that 13k capacity in the future, I see more and more o/os are going to opt for the tag axles as we are reluctant to give up our luxuries once we have them ;-)

I'm in the same position. With my stuff in it and full of fuel within an inch of running over I scale 20,200 on a 33K chassis. I have a ProHeat on order that is due in next week. That will be a few hundred so my realistic limit will be around 12,500#. I am going to add a tag axle in another 2 or 3 months. Whatever you do, don't add it at purchase because of the added taxes. It will wind up costing you around $20k instead of around $5k. From my limited research to this point I believe you will want to check on a steerable axle. I'm told you get lots of added tire wear otherwise. I don't know but I suspect toll fees will go up because I suspect they will charge for all 3 axles even when only running on 2. I believe it will be worth it to have it because although they keep me plenty busy as is I can take E loads that fit my box if I have it. That's worth an extra 50 cents a mile. Two other drivers for the company that have the tag setup tell me they get between 1.5 and 2 dozen E loads a year. That could pay for it within the first year depending on length of runs. Good luck with whatever you do.

To save weight, I would go with a Proheat as they are much lighter than a generator. When specing a new truck, go to a dealer that has the software to lay it out so you know exactly what it will weigh and were to place axles, fuel tanks ect for max. capacity. I have seen alot of people buy a class 8, only to find that it is a "C" truck. You would give up .10 cents a mile at the company I drive for with that miscalculation.
At 100,000 miles a year, you just lost 10,000 dollars.
Our cutoff weight is 9501 lbs instead of 13000 lbs.

I did not purchase the Pro-Heat but a Rig Master. I am aware of some complaints in the past, these were addressed and improvments have been made. After going to Pro-Heat web page they are both very similar. Rig Master throws out more Watts and BTU for the AC, I could not see if Pro-Heat needs an invertor or not but Rig Master does not require it. I really went searching for weight of both units could not find it listed on either site. If I remember correctly, it was around 300 both look similar in size and type of engine. So when I say Generator I may be wrong, what would be the proper name of these products if they are not generators?

I guess the "technical" term would be "APU" which stands for Auxiliary Power Unit.

HI BROOMPILOT! I AGREE THAT AN AUX. AXEL WILL HELP OUT WHEN NEEDED! BUT YOU NEED TO DO YOUR HOME WORK WHEN DECIDING ON WHICH AUX. AXEL TO PURCHASE, (SEE TOPIC #509 POSTED 7/11/04) I HAVE A PUSHER AXEL AND IT WORKS WELL FOR ME!

AS FOR THE FEDERAL EXCISE........ I WAS TOLD BY THE COMPANY THAT I PURCHASED THE TRUCK FROM NOT TO WORRY ABOUT THAT BECAUSE THE EXSISE TAX WAS ONLY CHARGED TO THE FIRST OWNER OF THE TRUCK WHO PURCHASED THE TRUCK FROM AN INTERNATIONAL DEALER WHO THEN MADE THE TRUCK INTO AN EXPEDITER, FUNNY THING THOUGH! THE FIRST COPY OF THE CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN SENT TO ME FROM SAID DEALER SHOWED SAID DEALER AS FIRST OWNER BUT LATER WHEN I RECEIVED THE ACTUAL CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN IT SHOWED ME AS THE FIRST OWNER, HUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMM WONDER WHAT THAT WAS ALL ABOUT? GLAD I KEPT THE FIRST COPY JUST IN CASE.

GOT TO GO! HOME TIME IS SCARCE!

BE CAREFULL OUT THERE!

on tag axle there is put it on at the time you buy it or wait
6 months and then put it on , so you don't have to pay extra tax
is wrong info as i have been told that tax should be pay as if it
was put on at the time purchase, but alot of places don't ask and
don't tell, this would be something for jeff to write about
and tell everybody what is what

the proheat has 110 and 12 volt power
and people at rig master once worked for proheat
and than went out on there own

i had a proheat on 2 truck's and they put out the heat and the
ac cool the truck down to 49f in 90f and in winter run you out
of the truck cause it was to hot in 20 below
but no matter what genset you got good choice
save money
