Generator vs APU

I talked to a guy who has a honda generator hooked up to his truck & runs a portable air conditioner inside his sleeper. He also has plugs that just run off his battery, which he only uses for microwave & a little lamp. I thought this was funny, but for the price compared to a APU I wonder why this isn't done more often? Do a lot of trucks run similar to this? I am sure messing with the generator everytime you want to start the AC would get old fast, but doesn't seem that bad to me, considering the cost savings. Just want some feedback on this... opinions??

Most APU systems are designed to charge batteries, run air and all electronics. I had a rigmaster in '08 and the convenience in the winter time of the batteries staying charged. Also no hassle of getting out in rain/snow to start it in my opinion is worth it.

Agree 100%... but what if it's an older truck & hard to justify the $8,000-$10,000 price tag of an APU?? Thats when I would consider this option

Ahhh.. alot of generators have remote starter buttons and auto chokes..some are up to 5000 amps. Sit in the bunk, hit the remote, the generator starts and turn on the AC...

A Honda 3000 amp with remote start is less then $2000 buck, a 12,500 btu portable room ac unit is under $600....you do the math...Oh and far less headaches then dealng with the repair issues of some APU's....and you are seeing more and more Owners going with that option when they need to comtinually repair their apu's..i believe their are 2 seperate converstions going on in here right now on this topic..
