General Question Regarding Rates

That's more than I made in 2010 and 2011 combined working customer service retail jobs, I think I could find some uses lol

some may snicker when I talk about a simple dime...but that is $8,000 a year more at 80,000 miles...those dimes add up...

The bonus is.....going to the top of the list...if a 3 skid ops is available they will offer it to you and you jump the other guys and get out...hence in the carriers thinking is that you are making more money....that is your bonus....
I'm a 2 skid Sprinter. Always have been. But there are taller loads, not just 3 skids, that require a Sprinter.

To answer WVCourier's question, people often get all wrapped up in what a Sprinter gets paid at this carrier versus that carrier. Carrier X pays twenty cents more for a Sprinter, woohoo! But they will flat let you sit there and bypass you with any cargo van loads that come up, because they can haul it cheaper in a cargo van, and/or don't have to listen to the Sprinter guy whine cause he's hauling cargo van freight at cargo van rates in his Sprinter, boohoo. Panther doesn't pay 10 or 20 cents a more for a Sprinter load, but then again they don't pay as cheap for a cargo van load, either. It's somewhere in the middle for both. So while you may not run very many loads at $1.10 a mile, you wont be running loads for 85 cents, either. So, then incentive is, at the end of the month, quarter, year, you've made as much or more money with your Sprinter at Panther than you would at the carrier that pays more for a Sprinter rate and less for the cargo van rate.

By the same token, I rarely had problems getting bonus money for running taller loads that wouldn't fit in a cargo van. If they ever said it didn't pay more, I told them fine, squish it into a cargo van, or good luck on getting it on a straight truck for a cargo van rate. Usually ended up cheaper paying me 20 cents a mile more than it did paying a straight truck 40 or 50 cents a mile more for it.

Hmmm.....methinks it's OK to run the extended as a two skid van. Can't believe the times I've hauled one or two skids in a Sprinter, at cargo height. Matter of fact, don't think I'd miss that many loads at all, while reporting the 100" mark.

Companies will often stack the pallets for a Sprinter height anyway, and not even call for a van. How many loads would I really miss out on, that are 3 skid cargo? Granted, the length helps on items other than pallets...but if your looking to just drive, make some bucks, and run steady, seems to me the Sprinter may get out ahead of you, but these games being played out there has proven one thing to me, your getting a load, or your not.

If shooting for a new 40,000 PU, or 300,000 house, rather than a new back deck, or used PU, then by all means, run every inch, every allowed weight, and get all the freight you can haul. I'll just run the van and be happy we're not having to resort to 7.50 per hour and dealing with the politics of workplaces...elsewhere.

I agree with you 100%, I had several loads in my sprinter that were one pallet that was maybe 10" tall including the pallet. I will say this if I could go back to the day I bought my ford, I'd have went to the Mercedes dealer where my dad bought his sprinter and got a high roof sprinter instead. Not because of the taller loads I could get but because my 6'2 behind could stand up in the cargo areas and not hurt my back or knees

Exactly why I searched, with due diligence, for a high top extended cargo, and drove all the way to NY to get it. Running for a real company now and getting all the miles I need in the cargo. When talkin rates, dimensions, weight, etc.....it matters not a hoot what you have IMV.

Get with a company that will run ya. :p

My personal wasted days running for deadbeats, is over.
