Gas Prices

Yes I know this is an old topic. BUT however -- I have GOOD NEWS! Yes it is possible to have a sentance with both "good news" and "gas prices" in it :D. Now to the news:

Earlier today on the radio I heard that the oil suppliers have stated the price of oil has reached its peak. The prices will start dropping because Oil Reserve is being re-supplied.

It has already taken effect in my town. A couple days ago gas prices were 2.30 for regular fuel. But today after hearing the radio- I payed attention to the prices which were 2.02 and 2.04. Theres a difference! In Beaverdam Oh the truckstops are 1.96!!

I'm glad the prices dropped a bit too, but don't you think it's sad that we're 'excited' that gas prices dropped to 'only' $1.94, etc?

I caught myself doing that yesterday... went to the gas station, and was like... ALL RIGHT!! Gas is down!!!... then sat there and thought, wait a minute... seems like just a few weeks ago, I was complaining because it was $1.50 a gallon...why am I so happy for $1.94?

I think the higher prices have a numbing effect... they raise them so high, that ANY decrease seems like they're doing us a favor....

I'm not quite clear on all the complaining regarding fuel costs when people blow by you on the road. ATI did a recent traffic survey here in NE Florida and found that out of the 5500 vehicles that they surveyed in one day 87% were exceeding posted speed limits by 20 mph or greater .

Added to that is the measly 9000 tickets, thats right I said 9000 aggressive driving speeding tickets that were written in the Entire state of Florida Last year according to the State Patrols Pleas for the New Mercury Marrauder Patrol cars and the new (Road Rage act) law that is supposed to pass next month to prohibit all left and center lane travel to promote an Autobahn type highway system.

Truckers need to keep in mind that if you are not passing a slower vehicle and are doing the posted speed limit and are not making a left turn you can be ticketed for holding up faster traffic. The law is rediculous. The fine is 4 points on your license and 65.00 for cars, trucks are probably more.

Anyone interested in reading about it should go to the myflorida.com site and see what how rediculous we think it is.

On a post a couple of weeks ago I decided to do a survey of my own (Trucks Ideling) Low this evening in quesion was 56 location was Newark DE. Exactly half of the trucks were ideling of the half that were not 20% were empty (no occupant) truck still there following day at noon to hot not to have AC or windows down.

What amazed the most were that larger % had the idle turned up very high and these were your Big Nose Petes and KW 900s with stacks the size of Red Wood Trees. And there is me trying to sleep with that Electric fan just sucking in all those diesel fumes, put it in reverse and just comes in thru the windows. Had to run the Generator just keep from dying and wish I were being cute but I am serious.

Even moved once it was so bad, but they just found me and parked anyway.

Whats up? Do people not care about saving $ and the benefit to the enviornment? I mean it was perfect sleeping weather and people have to run there trucks, there was no way they could have had the AC on without an electric blanket. And the heat it was only 56 outside theres more than enough insulation to keep it close to 70.

As for why they would idle in those conditions I have no idea. But as to why they had to be on high idle, here's the deal.
With a class 8 diesel engine, (and to be honest any diesel engine) high idle cuts down on wear and tear on the engine. It lessens the buildup of corrosive acids in the engine oil thus preventing premature wear. Most class 8 trucks have an idel limit system that will not allow you to leave the truck on slow idle and will in fact shut it down if left that way. This can be disabled as long as you don't care about your manufacturers warranty. Personally I wouldn't own a truck without a generator, but while driving for a company I really had no choice if it was too hot or too cold but to idle her.

Hope the info helps some.

We have found that we have to idle periodically in a class 8 while sitting to keep the batteries from running down. Not necessarily while sleeping, but definitely if watching tv or using the microwave. The crazy part is, there are times in the extreme summer or winter when it's actually cheaper to get an inexpensive hotel on priceline ($20-$40) if you include the cost of showers and truck stop food. We don't own this truck and it doesn't have a generator. I sure wish it did!

My ProHeat generator attracted a lot of attention on our recent 8-week run. People would ask about the cost, and how much it takes to run it, etc. I finally did a rough calculation to give them that figured if you the genrator 10 hours a night, run 43 weeks a year, staying in the truck every night, with fuel at $2.00/gal, the payback period on the generator is about 16 months. If the price of fuel is higher than that, the payback period is less. If you throw in some entire weekends sitting in a truckstop waiting for a load, the 10:1 ratio on fuel consumption just pays off even quicker. I'm guessing that I will have saved enough fuel in a year of running to pay for the generator.

Duke just maybe I am misunderstanding your post, but if you are in the left lane and no vehicles in the right lane why would you not move to the right just as a simple courtesy of the road. Why block the left lane? Let the speeders through and let the state troopers ticket them.:D

One reason you see a lot of trucks idling for no reason at all.. They are company trucks and the drivers don't care. They are not paying for the fuel. Those of us that do tend to be the ones that don't idle anymore than we have to. I've slept in a van so cold you could see your breath before.

Thankfully I don't have to do that anymore.

Now we get to roast..

Hey, oil is under 50 a barrel!
