What do you have to make your life easier and more profitable going down the road? Since we bought this truck we have added many gadgets! I have added the costs of some of the items we have bought to only be used as a reference as I am sure someone has purchased these items cheaper or have paid more.

Cell Phones - We have three Sprint - Verizon - AT & T we have the three so we can talk to family members, friends and also do business. We have the minimum of minutes with nationwide coverage and have found this to be the cheapest way for us to have cell phones.

Sprint Air Card We have tried the truck stop services and found our life was a lot similar to just always have internet service. This is one service as the years go by the service has gotten better and the price cheaper. We pay about 200.00 for the phones and the Sprint air card.

headphones This has been a lifesaver for both Bob and I for sleeping at night as the other one can listen to the radio at any volume they want. My head set is old and I don't know the price.

IPOD We have found for us this is the easiest and cheapest way for us to listen to books. Prices have great decreased greatly since we purchases this.

Lowrance GPS I did not have a lot of confidence in my self to get through my shift of driving if I had a lot of interchanges to do without help. We have also found that we argue a lot less when you can just look to the dash for directions. We paid approximately 600.00 two years ago

TMO Team Management Optics This is an item to tell us who is driving by a set of lights! 75.00 made by Bob and idea conceived by Terry

Inverter We have a 3500 watt inverter that came with the truck. We love this as we can plug in all of our 110 items. We have a crock pot, rice cooker and few other cooking items we use in the truck.

RV size Refrigerator/Freezer This has been such a great luxury and I cannot imagine in the future not having this cost saving item. We can keep our shelves stocked up and save money by not buying meals in the truck stops.

XM Radio This is a tax deductable item and is almost always on.

Quicken Have to have to to keep track of all the expenses. Approximate cost 75.00

Streets & Trips We actually use this to track the history of our loads and an over view of our route. We also use this to check where we are going to purchase fuel. Not sure of this cost.

Microsoft Office We use the spread sheets to keep track of all of our stats with the truck. Not sure of this cost.

Microwave We all know how important this item it.

21" TV Great for watching DVD's and not much else but collecting dust.

Oak Floor This has been so much easier to maintain and keep clean. We keep a rubber backed area rug on it that can be shook out and washed.

Lucy, you got some splainin to do. Please keep it to docb terms (dumb ole country boy) so I can comprehend. Right now I'm picturing the two of you in the back with 3d movie glasses on looking at each other saying "No, I thought you were driving." while Molly runs the truck.

Linda, I took your comments and modified them to fit my situation, hope that's ok?

Cell Phones – I have one, should have two phones but one thing at a time. Mine is connected to the cingular AT&T new AT&T we don’t know who we are phone company. I do have the best feature anyone can ever have, the drop call in major market feature. It really is a great feature, like when you are in NYC and talking to the dispatcher about getting the needed money to pay the tolls needed to get out of there and the call is dropped and can’t get it to even to dial the number - Such a great feature.

Cingular Air Card I can not tell you how great this is, I can be anywhere in Wyoming and not get a connection or where I am at right now, I have times where I can’t connect or when I do it crawls so slow I can play five hands of solitare before I get Yahoo.com on the browser. It drops the connection a lot, great system I can not recommend to anyone. Just this post is a pain and has taken me more than 45 minutes to get it posted and edited all the typos that appeared - BS, thanks AT&T. I pay about 150.00 for the phones and the Cingular air card for all this fun (I actually have three phones and the air card on the bill).

IPOD I can’t afford one of these until they drop in price like $50 for the 80GB video ipod because I have to pay so much for my cell phones.

Inverter I have one, somewhere, maybe... I don't know. It is a 2500 watt one but I think once I get the APU in board (really it is a 15KW generator) life will be better.

Refrigerator/Freezer I don’t have one in here yet but I got one almost ready to be installed, I need to get the new cabinets built because it is a drawer style 3 cubic feet unit and won’t work with the cabinets that are in here. I have worked with two companies on this little project that have provided some parts for this project and with these parts I reduced the power consumption enough that it won’t drain the batteries as much as a regular fridge does. I wanted it to be a 12 volt system but the compressor I got me hands on was not enough for the holding plate I used, so I went to a 110 volt compressor sized for a freezer, which works well.

XM Radio I got one of these things, and still trying to figure it out. I just got a couple of the XM radio units they you tie into the radio, I am going to pitch this one once I get the head unit built for the others. Kinda’ neat having one record music and such while you listen to the other one and being tied into the music/dvd library, I enhance my collection. I also was given two sirus units which I pitched in the garbage – I hate howard stern.

MS Streets & Trips I actually have 2004 mappoint but I had to buy a copy of MS Streets & Trips for a number of reasons, one was there was no GPS support. I will be getting the new 2008 map point which I can actually integrate with the other stuff I used, so I don’t have to type an address 20 times.

Microsoft Office I use MS office a lot, more than any other program. I got on order my sales versions of MS office 2007 (part of being an MS partner), will up grade all of this sometime after the first of the year if I get home.

Microwave I got a new microwave/broiler for $70. It is my second microwave I bought for this truck, the first one was dropped off at the salvation army because I didn’t needed it. The broiler feature is nice, I used it to make chicken at home to test it. I am waiting to get the cabinets in the truck before I put it in.

22" LCD movie screen I haven’t purchased the large one yet, I got a 19†sitting at home but decided not to put it in the truck – too small. I figured out how I can get the 22†in the truck and not use up a lot of space storing it. I got a surround sound system I want to put in here but hey maybe that is too much. This will be tied into the DVD storage computer. Oh I do have to get a TV antenna, I am using a wire strung across the cab and it is a pain.

Heated/Cooled Floor I have thought about this for a while and right now as I sort of freeze between truck idling times, I would like to wake up to a warm floor. I have the tubing, have the actual room underneath the truck and just need to install it. The thing is being out in the west, my floor in both the sleeper and cab was very hot to the point that the cab floor temp varied between 100 and 110 – my coin holder melted. Well I figure I can pull some of the heat away from the floor with cool water which is caused by the latent heat of the road, don’t ask where I am going to get the water from – I don’t know yet. But heat can come from the APU seeing the generator is water cooled. Oh I have flooring I picked up cheap as a close out if I remember correctly, it is really nice wood flooring.

Lights I have several LED lights laying around here needing to be installed. I am making a few lights using Luxeon K2 LEDs for the box lights (12 lights) and some lights in the cab/sleeper that I need to finish – these LEDs are about as bright as you can get. I have hacked together a reading light over the steering wheel and one in the sleeper and have one of them flexible lights that I need to mount, it has three levels. I was given a bunch of super caps modules from Maxell technology to try out for the lighting system in the sleeper, which they are interested in my testing them out. I also have a bunch of electroluminescent wire that I want to put into the sleeper to have some soft lights on when it is dark so I don’t fall into the sleeper.

printer/fax/scanner I went out and bought one of these things so I can print fax or scan while being bored. I brought everything with me to set it up except paper. I have 100 reams of paper at home I have collected through the years and had to buy some yesterday. Needless to say I can now email my BOL and waybill into the company, so I find the idea of a scanner more of a must more than a luxury.

Not mentioned is the J1939 adaptor being tested now with silver leaf program, a lot of bugs in it but I expected that because I hobbled it together and the other not mentioned is the truckputer project, which I now have the PS, my 15 inch monitor and wireles keyboard for.

Linda what is the “TMO Team Management Opticsâ€

Rechargable batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 9V) and battery charger. Available at Wal-Mart, Radio Shack and others. Except for when we loose batteries by losing a flashlight or leaving a walkie talkie behind, we have not purchased a new battery in four years.

I have asked Linder not to discuss the TMO until I hear back from our Patent Attorney. All I can say at this time is that this device will revolutionize the trucking industry when the Government gets around to mandating paperless logs. We hope to have a prototype viewing at Expedite Expo 2008. You will not need 3D glasses to view the prototype.

I can't wait. I'm just a dumb ole truck driver and still can't figure out what you need to figure out who is driving. I'm usually not confused since I drive solo but when I'm home in the car with family a quick glance at my hands for a steering wheel or the lack thereof usually does the trick. You fancy city fellers with all your high tech stuff sure do have a jump.

At one time I drove for a company that did some hauling for Fingerhut, a former catalog retailer. Fingerhut had a large private fleet team operation. I heard stories of a driver stopping to "check the tires". The co-driver in the bunk notices the truck is stopped and gets out while the driver is walking around the other side of the truck. The driver gets back in and takes off, leaving the co-driver standing on an entrance ramp. Does the TMO have anything to do with this situation?

headphones

I'm thinking about getting noise canceling headphones, but don't know much about how well they really work. My laptop is also my home entertainment system, but the audio really gets drowned out when I'm idling. And regular headphones don't help much. Anyone have any luck with these things?

RE: headphones

I had an earlier version of TMO. I would turn on the dome light, look in the rear view mirror and yep, it's me behind the wheel. Since I drove solo, it was just a way to double check the driver. However, one of the gadgets I had installed was a remote starter. Worked great in the cold weather. Just reach out from under the blankie, press the button on the controller that was located by my bunk, the engine would start, bury myself back under the covers until the van was warmed up. Worked good at bedtime, also. Engine would be running until I was under the covers and all warmed up, then the remote would time itself out and shut off.

When I ran team there was a rule I had with my co drivers. If you are in the bunk you keep your boots in front of the passenger side seat. That way if whoever is driving stops and gets out when he gets back in he can look and see if those boots are there. If they are he can roll, if they aren't he needs to stay put. My accesory always was those clorox bleach wipes to wipe down the toliet sea before I sat down. I'd put a couple in a ziploc bag and slide them in my back pocket on my way in the truckstop.

RE: Garmin Nuvi 350

I ordered a Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS today for my husbands
Christmas present. I think this will help us both out. Never
thought much about it until I read TeamCaffee's post.

You guys will love having a GPS! We are amazed at how much we depend on "Lori" to help us out of the situations we get ourselves into.
