Took my truck in to get an overhead (valve adjustment) the pulled the truck in the bay at 9PM, the truck was back on the yard at 12AM and the tech took a half an hour lunch. The problem is the charged me for four hours labor. I will call there in the morning when the powers to be are there. All Im saying is be carefully at FYDA Freightliner Columbus Ohio. Just saying!

Not defending Fyda (never done business there), but the labor guide for our engine says four hours. It seldom takes three.

Hope that helps.

The shop may have a set price for the valve adjustment which includes 4 hours of labor.

The time books were written when everyone used hand tools. Now no one uses them but there is no insentive for the repair shops to seek a new job time book. They are in fact stealing from their customers every day I had another shop do a clutch it was billed for 11 hrs and another hr to turn the flywheel. The entire job took 4 hrs it must be nice to get paid for hours of work that you do not perform. Then they have the b@lls to charge for "shop supplies" and they say by doing so it helps keep the labor charges down. I guess if you were hit in the head several times a day since childhood you may believe that crap. Truckers are the only workforce that it is legal to short their pay on every load. Customers pay on several different charts be it household movers or PC miler. Now how mant times are you paid for the whole trip 1 out of 100 if your lucky. We have GPS today it can tell you the miles on a trip down the the 1/10 of a mile but again the trucker takes it in the shorts because no shipper is ever going to use it because it will cost them more to ship.

Having run shops for years, the shop may be paying a flat rate to their techs, just as in an auto dealership. If they beat book time, which is written by labor time standards using all available tools, including air tools, they are ahead. If they are slow, dragging their feet or run into an issue, the tech loses. Shops have to pay for hazardous waste disposal and this is usually a percentage of the labor on all shop tickets, regardless of type. I hope this helps to clear things up a bit.

Most seperate the "shop supplies" from the hazard costs. I think I have spent hundreds per year on those "supplies".
You would think we would at least get a roll of paper towels out of it.

I worked at the Pete dealer in OKC they payed all techs by book time. Wheel seal 2 hrs if you did it in 1 hr or 4 hrs you got payed 2. And the shop charged the customer the book time not the hrs that were worked on it.

book times are re written constantly and air tools have been around for 30 years most where designed for big trucks and i doubt the truck is 30 years old so it was deffinatly wrote for moderen tools and the 4 hours is what some guy with no tool experiance wrote as a time to see a book time thats actually more then work time is rare they usually short the hours and all shops chage the book hours its comon practice and is less fight

4 hours is what I always paid for valve adjustment on my series 60 detroit. The shop I used did usually discount the labor rate $55/hr though. Freightliner...Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Not sure they do it for everybody...I used them alot so the gave me a break here and there.

I was pretty much just venting. I knew I was going to pay through the nose when I pulled in.

Cherokee borders Hardy, Highland and Ash Flat. Large area actually. 15,000 acres I'm told. The cop (my neighbor) says there is close to 900 miles of paved roads...I haven't measured 'em. Cherokee Village is a retirement community :D I don't really belong here..lol. Gotta watch these old codgers...I see more fender benders here than I do out on the road in the truck.

I occasionally check the trucks for sale on this forum and I have noted that FYDA is the only advertiser that never lists a price for the trucks that they have for sale. It makes me wonder if they're one of the dealerships that opens with "what will it take to put you in this truck". I've never liked dealing with companies that aren't out front with an asking price.

Come on now what you realy want is those nice clean red Mechanics cloth Wipers right great for when we got to wipe our lights off during our pre trip or wipe the oil Dip stick ect or wipe our hands after we have greased the fifth wheel. Am I right or what.. When Im at Westernstar or Freightliner I usualy ask the Mechanics if I can have a few and they seem to always let me have about 5 or 6 or more.

At the very least ya think they would wipe the greasy fingerprints off the door and steering wheel with those shop supplys we just bought.
I tend to ask what shop supplys are needed for the job and never get a straight answer.
I dont mind paying for the 1lb of floor dry that was needed but why should I pay for 2 whole bags?
