Bill my man, I think you will have to drop the tank before cutting a hole in the floor. But before you cut away you should know that G.M. solved the fuel pump problem. Either they switched vendors or the original vendor changed the design. I had a 1998 and had the fuel pump replaced at a Chevy dealer. The new pump was guaranteed for life and never gave me any problems. This was sometime in 2001.
I HAVE A 98 AND THE ORIGINAL PUMP WENT OUT ABOUT 185K. SAW THAT IS WAS A LOT LESS TIME CONSUMING TO CUT A HOLE. TOTAL TIME WAS PROBABLY UNDER 2HRS. TO DROP THE TANK WOULD HAVE PROBABLY TAKEN 6-8HRS. AND THEN HOPED LIKE HECK THAT IT DIDN'T GO OUT AGAIN. BY CUTTING THE HOLE IF IT GOES OUT AGAIN, IT WILL BE SIMPLE TO REPLACE. BTW, MOST AFTERMARKET PUMPS RUN BETWEEN $250-$300. THE GM PUMP WAS $450. YOU DECIDE.
pj, this only worked on Chev/GMC 5.7 gas engines.
miguy, does your van have an in-line fuel filter mounted along the frame rail? Or is the filter integrated into the pump?
Is there enough clearance between the bottom of the floor and the top of the tank to cut a hole without dropping the tank? Was a saber saw used or pneumatic nibblers?
I have a 03 Savanna 2500 with a 5.3 I got 317,+++ on it with the Orinigal Pump, Never let it go below a Quarter of a tank and change Fuel Filter every other Olil Change.
