Bill my man, I think you will have to drop the tank before cutting a hole in the floor. But before you cut away you should know that G.M. solved the fuel pump problem. Either they switched vendors or the original vendor changed the design. I had a 1998 and had the fuel pump replaced at a Chevy dealer. The new pump was guaranteed for life and never gave me any problems. This was sometime in 2001.

I have a 2002 with a build date of 4/02. My fuel pump took a cr*p at 114,000 miles. They must have saved the last "old" pump for my vehicle.

I HAVE A 98 AND THE ORIGINAL PUMP WENT OUT ABOUT 185K. SAW THAT IS WAS A LOT LESS TIME CONSUMING TO CUT A HOLE. TOTAL TIME WAS PROBABLY UNDER 2HRS. TO DROP THE TANK WOULD HAVE PROBABLY TAKEN 6-8HRS. AND THEN HOPED LIKE HECK THAT IT DIDN'T GO OUT AGAIN. BY CUTTING THE HOLE IF IT GOES OUT AGAIN, IT WILL BE SIMPLE TO REPLACE. BTW, MOST AFTERMARKET PUMPS RUN BETWEEN $250-$300. THE GM PUMP WAS $450. YOU DECIDE.

Dropping the tank takes 6 to 8 hours?

I had mine out in less than an hour, my biggest issue was the connectors for the fuel lines. I dropped it, cleaned it out and put it back in less than four - I stopped for lunch and answer the phone and emails. Went back in quick, and I did it without anyone helping me.

Remember what it used to be like?

Your car or truck most of the time didn't last beyond 150k and you replaced the fuel pump maybe three times at the most during that time. Now if a car doesn't last more than 200k there is something wrong.

Did I mention the fact that I was at the Flying J in Indy when it quit and had just filled my 35 gallon tank to the brim. Luckily I left it running in the fuel lane and only shut it off after I parked to go in and "make a deposit".

If you bang on the bottom of the fuel tank with a block of wood or something similar you can get one and only one "start" out of it. This knowledge was commonly shared amongst expediters. When my van failed to start at a shipper it dawned on me. Over the course of a few weeks it was cranking just a little bit longer each time before firing. I pounded on it with a chunk of 2x4, turned the key and it fired up. Ran it from Cedar Falls, IA to a delivery in Elk grove Village, IL. About a half mile after delivering it died. No amount of banging on the fuel tank helped. Time for a tow.

Too bad I didn't read your little tip there Moot, to pass on to husb to try.

His is a new truck with not many miles on it. So I guess they are still making the crap fuel pumps, or maybe his was built with the very last old one.

Interestingly, he's heard from a couple others with similar trucks that they had the same thing early on with their fuel pumps, but no problems since replacement. Maybe they save the good ones for the replacements? :D

Wonder how many days it will take them to receive the part this time? Last part took SIX days! Too bad warranty doesn't cover loss of potential income opportunities!

pj, this only worked on Chev/GMC 5.7 gas engines.

miguy, does your van have an in-line fuel filter mounted along the frame rail? Or is the filter integrated into the pump?

Is there enough clearance between the bottom of the floor and the top of the tank to cut a hole without dropping the tank? Was a saber saw used or pneumatic nibblers?

Sorry it took me so long to get back with you, Mine is a 2003 3500 GMC, and yes it has a filter along the frame. What I did is from inside the van came out aprox 16 in out from the filler hump keepin it centered and cut a 16 1/2 in square in the plywood with a circleler saw ajusted to the depth of the wood. Then used a saber saw with a metal cutting blade that I broke off just long enough so that the top of the stroke was about 1/4" deeper than the top of the metal and cut a 15" square but only on 3 sides, that way I can just bend it out of the way and put some screws back into metal through the plywood to keep everything pretty soild seems to work out good so far. Hope you all can understand my directions, if not let me Know and Ill help you out if I can.

NO disrespect, But I think changing your fuel filter that often is a little overkill. I change mine about every 50,000 and its nowhere near clogged, cant tell much difference in the one I take off and the new one. Ive even cut the old one into to look inside and its still fairly clean, I dont know how often the owners manual says to change them??
