Got a good one for you. 2005 freightliner with a 6.4 mercedes diesel MB900. This is a tow truck. I need to help this guy. Anyway, Someone has removed the fuel filters and then installed them with out bleeding the fuel system after instalation of new filters. Every diesel fuel filter I ever install had to be bleed if the filter was removed. I can find the bleed pump (proper name unknown) I need to know if they need to be bleed and how. I know I can crack each line to each cylinder but thats messy. Whats the proper procedures. The truck wont pull when there is a car on it.

If the truck is running, then it should bleed itself after purging the lines of air. In this cold weather if it it running and low on power you may have a gel issue, which is another mess altogether.

The MBE engine is different. When the fuel filters were removed you lost the prime, the problem is that when the filters were reinstalled they were not filled with fuel first, with the MBE engines this is a must do. The truck will not reprime itself.. The only way to get it primed is to have it towed to a freightliner dealer or buy a special hand pump for the MBE engines to reprime the system. Speedco also has these hand pumps as do most other places that service MBE engines. I have an MBE 4000 series engine, the first thing I was told is if you lose the prime the only way to get it reprimed is to have it towed to a service center that has the special priming pump. The truck will not start no matter what you do once you lose the prime. Trying to bleed the system will do no good. The engine will not reprime without using the special pump. This pump takes the air out of the system and primes the engine. If the truck is running it still might need to be taken to a service center to have the rest of the air bled out using the pump.

About the gel, put new fuel filters on filled with power service 911, add powerservice 911 to fuel tanks. that should do it. The MBE filters are drop in filters, so you would remove the filters put in new filters and fill the the filter housing with Powerservice 911.

Don't those Germans put hand pumps for priming fuel filters on their engines?

i'm sure glad i have a c-15 cat. special pump? you've got to be kidding me. and according to freightliner in charlotte, the mercedes is just as bad as the cat 3126, or c-7 engine. class 8 is the only way to go for reliability and durability as well as longevity. and i still get 9 mpg with 550 horses in a 10 wheeler! no right lane with the flashers on through donners pass or the grapevine as well as fancy gap. it's well worth it to go this route. now if there is only freight left out there that pays anything.........

I have the MBE 4000 series 2.8 liter class 8 engine in my 2007 Western Star. With almost 200.000 miles on it I have had no problems with it.

Does the 3126 need to be primed when changing filters and if so how?

The 3126 doewn't need to be primed when changing fuel filters and neither does the MBE engines as long as you fill the fuel filter housing with diesel fuel after you drop in the new filters. I have changed the fuel filters in my MBE with no problems.

I don't want to make things any more confusing then they already are but there is one more thing to consider... fuel fungus!:( You don't see it very often, but it happens.

This is a very real possibility if fuel is being purchased at a location that doesn't sell a lot of fuel. Fungus will plug your filters very quickly resulting in the usual loss of power, etc. Power Service puts out a product (can't remember the name or color of the bottle) that will kill the fungus but it will still take several filter changes to get it out of the system. If you suffer from a fugal issue your filters will be black or very dark colored. If you have drop in filters it should be easy to determine.
