What is the best way to pay for fuel? Take cash with you from the start? Work off of comcheck? Or pay with A/X at the end of the month with no interest? Need some opinions guys on what you believe is the best route to take.
Thanks

Many truckstops give fuel discounts when you use a com card. Using a credit card will generally have a higher fuel price then cash or comcard. If you do use a credit card use one that gives rewards or cashback on fuel purchases.
A disadvantge with cash is having to carry large sums with you and also having to put up large deposits before you can commence fueling.

I have an AmerExp card that gives me double points for fuel but I don't know if it will out weigh the added cost per gallon.

Generally when you use a credit card the fuel will be about 5-6 cents a gallon more. Not all truck stops charge more for credit cards,I belive Wilco in the SouthEast charges the same price.

Also make sure you get the rewards card issued by the truck stop chains. They all have them and you get points and showers put on them based on your gallons bought.

Thanks Rich
I have all of them with the exception of Pilot and you have to apply in person on that one they told me. I appreciate your help. I will have to play it both ways to see what works the best. I am remodeling my home and double points in A/X gets me some real good stuff from Home Depot. But I don't want to throw it away at the pump.
Well we are leaving in the morning for Ohio for oreintation and hopefully loading before the weekend. Thanks for all the help. You know as a newbie I will be on here frequently needing some more info I am sure.
Thanks Again

While on the subject of reward cards one little quirky thing I did was to get Supermarket Discount cards from about 35 different chains around the country. While it may cause a chuckle or two I figured I saved about $200 a year on road supplies etc.

I've got a Kroger card. One thing for sure that $200 is better for you than them.
Have a good one off to bed I go tomorrow is the beginning. Real excited and positive about the future. With the help of a lot of good advice we are on our way. Thanks

I buy Speedway (http://www.speedway.com/) prepaid fuel cards at Marc's (a local discount store chain):

The cards must be paid for in cash at Marc's but offer a 10 cent per gallon discount off the posted pump price at all Speedway (and affilated co.'s) Speedway is a regional chain with locations in about 10 states. The also have a SpeedyRewards program that I haven't signed up for yet - but the fuel card can be used in conjunction with it.

Since I run regionally (midwest) and am usually home after each run this works pretty well for me. I also check for the lowest fuel prices (www.akrongasprices.com) in the area - to find the cheapest Speedy to fuel at - fortunately the one right down the street is often one of the lowest.

With Panther T/A is generally the best option using the Comdata card. You have to use the daily price info from the driver website to determine who has the best price. With your Comdata card you get pricing better than the cash price so there's never a reason to use cash unless you are coasting to the pump empty and they don't take Comdata. Flying J is the problem company. They will not take Comdata. You can get one of their Tab Bank cards and get the cash price with it but no better than cash price. Some of their locations are Conoco branded and if you have the Conoco Mastercard you get a 3% rebate on the credit price. That makes the net cost lower as long as the credit price is $1.68 or above. The farther above the greater the savings compared to cash price. It's a big nuisance so I mostly fuel at T/A. Read the post at the top about price vs cost as well for additional understanding of fuel pricing.

OOIDA has teamed up with Fleet One.

This hooks directly to your checking account I believe a one time $15. fee.

Once a week every dime on fuel you guy is deducted from your checking account, you get daily E-mails on what, where, how much etc...

The greatest benefit, is having to carry three thousand dollars with you to get cash prices, and a two cent a gallon off the cash price to boot.

Need cash? No Fees there either, just punch it on the screen and any dollar amount you want is waiting for you at the fuel desk. No phone calls, no waiting, just fuel and go. Accepted at all Major fueling stations except the J. J has its own Cash Card which is nice, but the convience of this is great plus speed.

You must be an OOIDA member to get this on this program.

Others have stated they here in the past they do not like it, but I found it works very well for me and assists me in my book keeping.

We have the fleetone cards at Transtewart and it is nice to have.We do get cash prices at alot of places and not to mention they are excepted at a lot of places.Pilots,TA and a bunch of smaller fuel stops. They just deduct it from my settlement weekly. You can also get on their website and find stations and it will also tell you what kind of things that truck stop offers.

Right now I am running local metro Chicago. I buy prepaid gift cards (not the blue fuel card, those only good for gas)at Speedway, save $2.00/$50.00 load (4% or .12 cents per gallon at $2.99/gal. Use my Speedway Master card to pay for it and in the first sixty days get 8% on all purchases at Speedway (8% or .24 cents/gal, and 4% or .12cents in the future. Please beaware Speedway in the last 2 months has gutted their points program since they claim it was to "rich". But you still get a point per 1/10th of a gallon purchased , which is 1.5 cents per gallon. 66,000 points equals a $100.00 free fuel card. So to summarize I am getting .37 1/2 off per gallon diesel now, and will drop to .24 1/2 after sixty day at the present price of $2.99 /gal/ of diesel and with the current rewards program with Speedway. I spent many hours scouring the net and I do not think you can do much better.

The Truckers Advantage is exclusive to OOIDA members but other Fleet One plans are available to nonmembers . I have worked as a company driver for companies that used Fleet One and they got additional monthly rebate checks from Pilot for using Fleet One .
