Front License Plate?

I call my friend who is an MSP CE trooper and she said that tractors need them on the front, the straight trucks and vans go in the back of the truck - Michigan issues one plate and only one plate.

ok I guess it was lost in translation?

I just got an interesting email, I wish people ... never mind.

To answer the question that was asked in the email, no I don't work for the Michigan State Police, Carrier Enforcement. I asked a simple question to a reliable source who has been a good friend for a long time.

Hello All,

For those with a single plate, could you make a high quality color photocopy, seal the copy in plastic and mount it on the vehicle
in the license plate holder...???

Happy New Year..!!!

Nah... I don't think the DOT likes you making copies of license plates, even your own.

I was told by a TN trooper, today, that FMCSA says the plate goes on the front on all commercial vehicles over 4500 gvw. That doesn't make sense. How many times does a trooper cruise along behind long enough to run your plate?

He's either pulling your leg, jerkin' yer chain, or he's messin' with ya.

The location of a state-issued license plate is determined and enforced by the state which issued the plate, not the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

I won't even comment on the 4500 GVW commercial vehicle thing.

Now, Turtle, he was hard at work rousting trucks out of the auto section of a rest area. Could it have been that he was making work for himself?

We get pulled into the Franklin, KY scales almost every time now, since they can't read our plate from the front. Last time, the DOT guy asked why we don't have one on the front. I told him MI only issues one, and wants it on the back. He was ok with that.

I also got stopped both in pa and oh for not having one on the BACK...i told them il. requires it on the front and only issues one...i fixed the problem by having il. irp office fax me a copy of the statute that describes where the ONE plate is to be placed...on the front....frank

As previously mentioned I also had a car registered to Florida and they only issue one plate for regular vehicles...bobtails may be different....but I only got one and asked the lady at the dmv about the 2nd since I came from Ohio and she said there is only 1 plate and that's that. And since I was a first time plate buyer in Florida it cost me 185$ for one little metal plate. Most expensive piece of metal I ever bought.

Most likely there was property tax inculed in the price of the tag. In GA they had the tax onto the cost of the tag. Jerry Lee

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BIGGEST CROCK OF AN EXCUSE TO PULL A TRUCK OVER. I BELIEVE A LOT OF OFFICERS USE THIS EXCUSE TO PULL TRUCKS IN ORDER TO TRY TO FIND OTHER VIOLATIONS. I HAVE A TRUCK PULLED OVER OUT ON THE OPEN ROAD A LEAST ONCE A MONTH FOR THIS EXCUSE. I HAD A TRUCK PULLED OVER BY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY IN A LITTLE TOWN COMING OUT OF EL PASO A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. MY DRIVER SAID THIS GUY WAS AN A-1 JACK-OFF. HE SAID THAT HE HAD NEVER BEEN TO TALKED TO IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE THE WAY THIS OFFICER TREATED HIM, NOT EVEN IN THE MILITARY. HE GAVE MY DRIVER A TICKET FOR NOT HAVING A TAG ON THE REAR. IN TENN WE GET ONE FOR THE FRONT. JUST LIKE MOST STATES, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN YOU GET A DUPLICATE TAG. I HAD TO WRITE THE JUDGE A LETTER EXPLAINING THIS TO HIM AND OF COURSE HE HAD ENOUGH COMMON SENSE TO UNDERSTAND, UNLIKE ONE OF HIS OFFICERS. TO SWITCH TOPICS, I KNOW OF A DRIVER THAT GOT PULLED OVER IN FL A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO ON 95S AT A CHICKEN COUPE AND WAS FINED FOR BEING OVERWEIGHT. HERE'S THE CRAZY THING, HE HAS AN 24FT EXTENDED CAB FREIGHTLINER WITH A GVW OF 26K. HE HAD ONE PIECE ON HIS TRUCK THAT WEIGHED 2,600LBS. HIS TRUCK WEIGHED 18,600LBS. TOTAL. THE OFFICER TOLD HIM THAT A NEW FL LAW SAYS THAT ANYTHING OVER 10K ON A STRAIGHT IS CONSIDERED OVERWEIGHT. HE WROTE HIM A TICKET FOR BEING 8,600LBS OVERWEIGHT @ $.05/LB. HE TRIED EXPAINING THAT HIS GVW IS 26K, BUT THE OFFICER SAID THAT DIDN'T MATTER. ANYTHING OVER 1OK IS OVERWEIGHT, EVEN WITH NO FREIGHT ON THE TRUCK, HE IS 6K OVERWEIGHT. WHAT IS THAT? THE OFFICER TOLD HIM THAT ANY TRACTOR OVER 30K IS CONSIDERED OVERWEIGHT. THE OFFICER TOLD HIM THAT IT WOULD DO NO GOOD TO TRY TO FIGHT IT IN COURT, THAT HE WOULD LOSE. THAT IS THE BIGGEST BUNCH OF CROCK! I TOLD HIM THAT IF IT WERE ME AT THE WEIGH STATION THAT DAY, THAT I WOULD HAVE PROBABLY HAD MY AUTHORITY REVOKED AND PUT IN JAIL. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS NEW LAW SOMEWHERE.
