Hello folks. I may have just made a grave error. I accepted a load to Fort McMurray. In the winter.

Anybody have any helpful input? Where do I need to have chains? On which tires? Should i get a winterfront? Where can I get chains? Any other tips?

Just stressing it setting all this up, any help is appreciated.

Diesel,

Fort McMurray, Alberta? As luck would have it my brother-in-law works at one of the Oil Sand Fields there.

Not much snow - but cold at -29c.

Hi you can buy a set of chains at any Flying hook,Or truck stop or maybe a walmart not sure.Yes you need a winter front...Also I'd get a few bags of kitty litter to keep with you It will help If you get stuck In the snow and Ice...

If it stays well below 0 F, put a card box in front of your grill. Forget the kitty litter up there. Chains any dealership or J not Walmart. If you do get stuck and your on a highway as you have probably noticed all the vehicles left in the snow, thats cause up there they will not tow vehicles out until the pavement is dry, not just snow free but dry. They sit sometimes for weeks unlike down in the states. Good luck drive slow in bad weather.

After delivery do not wait around get back to Minesota ASAP. Hope you got $ to come back as thats alot of DH on your own.

Been there done that, in the winter also.

I plan on returning to the states a quickly as possible. Our border cross point is Sweet Grass, MT. I'll return there, and then head east until somethign comes up(reg load or my own), or backhaul can find something.

Current temp there is -20F

I'm going to check the dealerships for a t300 winterfront, as they do exist, but i doubt i'll find one. Emergency food, water and truck supplies are already packed. Now it's off to wally world for some thermal unerwear and winter stuff.

Keep us posted on how your trip turns out. You are a lot braver then we (I) would be!

Well, I don't know if brave is the word. I guess I took it because I figred it probably wouldn't come up too much, and alot of it was the challenge. I want to do just to say I did. I've already recieved alot of messages of good wishes from friends and colleagues.

We're at the Iowa 80 right now, they seem to be out of the size of chains we need, 295/75R22.5

So I'm going to check in the AM at KW in Sioux Falls. I just cut an old set of red mudflaps to fit my grill openings. It should fullfil the need.

Thanks for the help everybody.

Heck, you make this sound special... we do mostly northern loads for our customers all the time. Snow, cold and remote locations is our specialty.

The first rule is to not stress out over the trip, spend that energy in preparation and enjoy your time.

Don't set out on the trip with anything not quite right on the truck, cold tends to amplify issues and the resulting trouble that can occur.

Chances are if you are doing this within the next week you won't need chains, but they are standard equipment when running snow country. We carry a sand & salt mix that is spread liberally on the roads up here in the winter, but I cannot remember the last time we actually used it.

Bring warm winter clothing. For warmth, layering is your best bet. Ensure you bring changes of clothes in case you get wet, particulary with footwear and gloves. Actually, mitts are warmer than gloves. As well, you need more than a baseball cap on your head to keep warm. We are huge fans of Gore-Tex shell jackets. They keep the wind and moisture out, the layers underneath provide the warmth. If your clothes get wet change them immediately as you will chill up with wet clothes. Bring sunglass as glare from ice and snow can be very hard on the eyes. You will likely be just fine, but do ensure you bring enough clothing that you can keep warm should you experience a complete breakdown with no help close. A quality winter temperature rating sleeping bag is ideal for this.

In warmer climates not much attention is paid to wind chill, but up here where it gets really cold wind chill tells the true story of how cold it really is outside. Fact is, the season is just getting underway and hasn't really started yet.

Is your cell phone going to work in the area you will be in? Find out now before you get there to find out.

Keep your fuel tanks topped up.

put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle so when your glass get dirty and the windshield is freezing with the washer fluid on it you can spray the rubbing alcohol on there and run the wipers. it will keep it clear for a while.

Great suggestion arkjarhead. I would just like to add that most OTC rubbing alcohol is %70. Ask the pharmacist for the %90 stuff. It contains less water and lanolin. It cost a little more but works much better. If you end up in a ditch for a week in Canada just add two olives to the alcohol and it won't really matter. Cheers!

Phreak, shopping at the I-80 for tire chains? Come on you were in the chrome shop. You are the man with the chrome/stainless arm.

Hope your trip goes well and that everyones suggestions got to you in time. Extreme cold is nothing to mess with. Be prepared. Watch for over heating and irregular fan noise with a winter front/mud flaps.

Take care!

The only other time I heard that advice was from my wife when our water heater croaked.

Well, I hope to be rolling again today. Just spent the last day sitting in Chamberlain, SD. The throttle pedal on the 'ol KW gave up.

Nope, havent gotten there yet. There were delays with permits, and then having to be towed 120 miles to get this truck fixed.
