Having trouble passing my road test took classes at roadmaster. Took test 4 times failed not because of poor driving just gear problems. I do fine with the instructors on road but it comes to testing i get all nervous. my turns, lane changes are fine but i lost my bearings and didnt get my rpms up before i shifted the next gear. I was just a 1/2 mile from school he flunked me same examier each time.Examier said i would have passed but screwedup on roadside stop when took off. I even knew better thats made me so mad i cried. I even requested a different examier 3 different times they ignored my request and had him again. I dont think roadmaster is very favorable of women driving truck. Now they won,t even work with me anymore. I have to get another permit and start all over. should I forget the class a and go get the class b or should i renew my permit and keep trying?::mad::(

As long as you are handling the vehicle well you should try again. Have you checked to see if any schools in your area have auto shift trucks? I would even look at some of the big companies that will help you get your license, especially since you are likely to work for them anyway. If you try for a class B you are still dealing with the same transmissions. There are some big companies that aren't that bad to get started with that can help you get your class A.

that depends, if you are going into expedite and a straight truck then just get your class b. if a tractor is in your future then you must keep trying. never been a big fan of these schools. either way i, personally would get my license at my local dmv or which ever one is closest to you that does testing. look around for a truck to borrow or rent. ask a business that has one if you have any connections. local dmvs seem to be easier, but dont put aside the fact that after you obtain a cdl there is still the training aspect that is of utmost importance. good luck and dont give up. make a decision on what you are going to drive. where are you located if you dont mind my asking.

Well you may not like my opinion but if you can't handle the test, you won't handle the road which is much harder.

On top of that, there is no real difference between the class A and B license other than what you are going to drive for the test. You will have to do the same exact thing for both and I think if you passed the backing up in the dock test with a trailer and the right turn, you masters the hardest part of the test.

Now with that said, try to find a third party tester who will rent the truck for the test with an automatic or autoshift trans, eliminating the problems of shifting altogether.

Oh and most importantly - R E L A X

It is only a test.

There is one downside to testing with an autoshift. If you test with an autoshift that is ALL you can drive, you will end up with an "automatic only" restriction.

My 2 cents, practice, and dont over think it. It sounds like you are able to handle the truck and that you have the hardest parts down, so all thats left is relax and drive.

I'd sure like to see a reference for that statement, because I'm not believing it. [ I promise to apologize if you're right, ok?]

My understanding of the 'automatic only' restriction is that it is used to indicate a physical handicap that prevents the driver from shifting, not to indicate that one doesn't know how to shift.

Not all states actually have that restriction and many have the mechanical aid and other restrictions listed in the the list I have and there is no federal requirement.

However taking the test with an autoshift opposed to an automatic or ultramatic can be construed as anything but an automatic trans because you do use a clutch

Interesting...........never heard of this before.

Looked all over the txdps.state.tx website and could not find any reference to this at all.

But, when searching online, I ran across this:
Texas License Restrictions

Apart from granting you additional driving privileges with these driver license endorsements, the DPS may also slap some restrictions onto your license. Texas driver's license restrictions are used to discourage or prevent you from driving under certain conditions, for example, if you take the driving test on a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission, you are not allowed to drive a vehicle that is equipped with a regular manual gear shifter.

Texas Drivers License Endorsements - TX CDL and Motorcycle Endorsement - Education4Drivers.com

Here are the Texas driver's license restriction codes that are listed in the official Texas drivers license manual. You should always refer to the latest copy of the manual as the book is revised and published every year.

•T Automatic transmission

Some of these driver's license restrictions apply only to commercial driver licenses and if you currently hold a regular Texas drivers license, you should not worry about those. If a restriction will be place onto your driver's license, the DPS clerk will explain to you what it means and what are the conditions for removing this restriction from your license.

Texas Drivers License Restrictions - TX Driver License Restriction Codes - Education4Drivers.com

But, since I can't find it anywhere on the State of Texas's website, I am in belief that whoever owns this "education4drivers" website is popping some other states "restrictions" onto their "Texas" info.

Still, it's interesting.....never knew such a restriction was ever in play in any state.

Other than some numb nut at a school who or where did this " Automatic only deal" come from. Automatic with no air brakes??
Hearing how some of the new younger drivers shift I don't believe it. Go to another test site.
Get a job with Hunt or Schneider and practice taring theres up before you buy one.:D
