fleet reposition

This question mostly pertains to the panther system. Is it better to try to sit myself on the edge of a number of service areas or just chose one and go to the heart of the area? Up to this point I've been primarily taking the suggested relocation and going as close to that as possible. Now I'm trying to figure out how to best use the fleet repositioning information for when it is necessary.

Generally speaking it is to your advantage to be on as many boards as possible.

I used to check the QC for the fleet reposition info and mark it on a map if I was in new territory. Eventually I had enough info on my map to make an educated decision as to where to be located to be in two or three different boards. For example if I had a suggested location to go to Indianapolis, I would relocate to south of Indy to be on the Indy and Columbus, IN boards. (Actually, I would go home and park in my drive to be in the Indy board.)

You might need to keep in mind that panther goes out 50 miles to determine who is on a board.just like theoldprof said mark your spots and after time you will remember them. I always do a 300 mile reposition when I get to the truck stop that I will be staying at.this will help you look at daily load averages and after time learn where the hot spots are.with out giving out to many secrets.LOL there is a place in Ohio {Jeffersonville} on I-71 exit 65 its a T/A truck stop if you stay there you are on 3 boards but if you stay at exit 69 flying J you are only on 2 boards. last time I was there it gave you about 5 more loads a day average. also keep in mind that what the QC says on how many trucks are available take that with a grain of salt as it not very accurate.if you are relocating after you have unloaded it helps to call and find out how many trucks are in the location you are planning on moving to. good luck and hope this helps..

Eb mentioned go to the heart of the area. If you mean your suggested reposition sez Indianapolis, the GPS will take you to the center of Indy. You will be setting in front of the state building and main post office. I was always a Wally World camper. I looked up an address for a Wal Mart for every reposition location. Helpful hint: Wherever you go to park and wait, send a QC message asking for your position when you are at your camping spot. I have been in Ft Wayne IN on two occasions, and I found out the Big Kitty couldn't see me in that particular location. That happened in another location, also.

Thank you all. I was leaning towards the multiboard approach, but don't want to always trust my intuition when it comes to large automated systems. As a matter of fact, I was sitting at the Jeffersonville TA which prompted me to ask the question. And it turns out I got my load off of a board that wasn't the one that was my original suggested reposition location.

While on this topic of sitting location--any advise/experience on the three digit zip code boundaries. Last weekend after parking I found that I was sitting literally in one corner of a zip code area. If I wanted to cross the street in one direction or the interstate in another direction, for lets say a meal, I would have been in a different three digit zip code area. From experience, is the qc that sensitive to those boundaries to bump me down on a board?

Ebs,
I have found the QC to be highly sensative in some areas and it will bump your position if you cross zips!!!!One thing that has happened to me not to long ago,I was in east st.Louis sitting at a flying j and I started out as #2 on the board at 8:00am then I checked back around 10:00 am and I was #4 then within a few minutes #5.I found out on the owners web site you can check your sat. positions and the QC was flipping back and forth from 2 different citys. This is one of the times that this happened to me another I was in tennese with the same problem!!!Best advice I could tell you is after you secure your position where you want to stay, ask dispatch over the QC your board position so you will have a stamped record of it,in case of a problem.Although dispatch will usually tell you too bad if you cross zips!!!.Check your sat. positions online often when you goto un familiar areas so you can catch a problem before you waste a whole day for nothing!!I beleve it updates when you turn your key on and off and also every 15 minutes.I have heard of people un plugging the Qc so it will hold your position, But dont know what the big kitty would say if they found out you did that or if you get a load offer and your an extra 50+ mile from shipper.LOL The QC sometimes fails and if you start having alot of problems with it its better to have it checked out,I had one fail on me in north carolina it showed me there even though I drove back home to a freightliner dealer for repairs.
I hope this helps

Don't forget about the 1st outs that may show up that in effect bump you down the list. The trucks available can't be correct as evidenced today while sitting at the TA in Atlanta, shows zero available yet i am 4th out. Maybe because of the weekend personel at Panther taking the weekend off and the system locks up untill someone reboots for instance or approves/backs-up previous data. Who knows.

As long as we are talking Panther, how do most handle the follow-up calls by Panther after you turn down you don't want, say a short 140 mi. load w/ 90 mi. dead head, asking if there is anything they can do to change our mind?

That's an easy one: Show me the money

Best thing to do is stay on as many boards as possible For instance:
if you are in Michigan and you want to be on the Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Battle Creek Boards go to Hastings. Does that help?

I have a glitch for ya....we positioned ourselves 1/2 way between two boards and found out after 2 days that we weren't showing on either of them. :(

Whenever you stop you need to do a mac 8 from that position and see what boards, if any, show up no more than 50 miles away. Then you need to qc dispatch asking your board position specifically on the ones within 50 miles. If they don't acknowledge you on a specific board you'll know right away and can look into it.

Ha! Bilinguel...that's funny! Actually this situation isn't Panther specific. I did something quite similar at Landstar. I was told the Atlanta and Augusta offices were equally busy. So, me, in my infinite wisdom, split the difference and camped out in Athens after making a drop there. Three day's later, when i was all fired up and ready to quit and start screaming favoritism at everyone like a lunatic, somebody pointed out that typically both offices would do a 50 mile radius search and without fail find the empty truck of a knowing driver who had , of course positioned himself in one market or the other.
