Female Expediters(?)

Hi roadrunner,

I would be happy to give you my perspective on expediting. I am a female, not solo, run with my spouse of 30 years, both quit professional jobs to come out here about 5 years ago. I don't think I can go back to the real world anymore...my mind is jello, I haven't had panty hose, heels or a suit on in 5 years...no lunch necessary as a 22 pound WEIGHT GAIN has also been a new contribution to my list of trucking accomplishments!

What would you like to know? Lately, I expedite part-time, but I was out a lot last summer. I'd be happy to answer any questions! I do run solo, unless you count my four legged friend.

Stay safe out there!

I received an e-mail asking me the same thing because the lady in question saw this post. I will post here what I e-mailed to her, in case any other lurkers have the same questions.

<<Hello!

Would you be driving a truck or a van?

There are a number of females that drive solo, and not just for expedite companies.

With an expedite company, expect times of running hard, with lots of down time in between. Can you entertain yourself? Do you have a hobby, such as reading, knitting, etc? Can you drive all night?

In expediting, most (certainly not all though) shipments come out late in the day, for delivery first thing next morning. Sometimes you'll have enough time for an hour or two of sleep, sometimes not.

If you're driving a van, you don't have to have a log, so some companies will let you drive farther than 500-600 miles at one time. Not all companies do this. Some do limit you.

I haven't had any bad experiences. Most drivers (male) see you alone in your van or truck, and leave you alone. Some may invite you to sit with them if they see you in the restaurant, or may talk to you in the TV room. There was one male in a truckstop that followed me around the truckstop for a bit, but he didn't bother me.

If you go into expediting, most female drivers in expediting will be willing to talk to you. Seeing a woman come up to your truck/van is perceived as less threatening than if a man comes over to say hello.

I go with my gut instinct as to whether or not an area is safe, such as a rest area or truck stop. If something "feels" wrong, then I move on right away, or if it's at a delivery, I stay in my van with the doors locked until they open. If you're driving a truck, your options for places to stop are more limited. Being in a van, I can park at a busy shopping center if I'm in doubt about the safety of an area.

All in all, I enjoy expediting. You get to meet interesting people. Most expediters from all companies are very nice. I have trouble staying in one place for very long (boredom factor), so if nothing comes up in a day, I go home, or move to another area.

Is there a certain amount of income you are looking to earn each month? The income in expediting varies from month to month, and year to year. One month or year may be great, with the next being terrible.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to get in touch with me again!>>

Like I told the lady that I sent this e-mail to, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

If anyone see anything wrong with the info I posted, please let me know so I can correct it. This business is different for everyone that is in it.

Stay safe out there!:) :)

I am also a solo female expediter. I have been expediting for 18 months now.

Are you going to be at GATS this week? If so, email me ASAP and we can get together there.
