Ah ha! Good catch. It sounds like the kind of tweak FedEx would find easy to fix. If you succeed, you'll have done a favor for a bunch of drivers.

You guys are forgetting one very important item. Yes they raise your percentages for a trip but is the rate to the customer reduced?? Thats what needs to be found out. Fedex National LTL is coming on strong. I have a brother in law who is General Manager of a hat/cap factory and he is getting daily calls about how FDXLTL can deliver like the expediting companies, but at cheaper rates. So does a 2% increase mean anything when the overall rate is dropped 8-10%.

How many of us remember when GE got that rebate for each trip which came from the contractors portion only, and this was at " Contractors Request", yeah right.

Maybe I am being foolish but, why is everyone so concerned with the FSC and how much FedEx is getting. I am an owner operator and all I am concerned with is how much am I getting and if it is not enough then I will not accept the load and if it stays at a rate I can not live with I will find another carrier and if that still does not work I will find a new occupation. Everyone seem to feel that the carriers are responsible for our over all well being but it is a dog eat dog world and you have to look out for yourself. Also it seems that drivers are trying to micro manage the rates, if the load pays $2.00 a mile, take it even if there is NO FSC. It all comes down to how much does the load pay. I take into consideration the distance from my last drop to my next drop and if the rate is high enough to cover all the miles then I take the load, if not I refuse.

No it is not reduced. That is already known. The recent FedEx tarriff INCREASE has been previously discussed in the open forum.

Well I guess you don't understand much about the FSC. It is Charged to the customer to offset the cost of fuel. And the FSC money should go to the one who is paying the Fuel. that's why everyone was upset about it.

Now the General Tariif may have been increased but deep discounts and special contracts exist Big Time paticularly in the temp loads. Looks like Pfizer might be bailing out due to the hijackings last year plus rates.Swift and Jb are coming on strong and FedexLTl has to compete.

What are you reading? Or better yet, when was the last time you looked at what these loads actually book or bid at? You have no clue or you wouldn't have made that statement.

Interesting, no van increase.

I guess I have to buy a truck... or should I.....

I was asked about FedEx LTL today and could not really answer the questions the head of the shipping department had. The one thing I pointed out to this 'new' customer is that the difference, I think, is that the LTL division will most likely share the truck with other freight but CC will give you exclusive use of the vehicle. The latter was what the guy wanted and he was on the phone with FedEx as I was placing my order. I saw a FedEx CC van pull up about an hour later when I was getting my truck loaded so someone got a good load.

If I understand what has been said about this it is only the reefers that are getting an increase and the others only if they adjust the fuel mileage calculations. Is that correct?

It's Funnie that you talk about FedEx LTL loads. One of our trucks just picked up a FedEx LTL that paid very well. So bring on the FedEx LTL loads. We will take a C load that pays over 1.50 for all miles.

I agree. Diane and I have plucked a number of good loads out of the FedEx Freight system. The more LTL freight FedEx hauls, the more we like it!

I know what you mean Steve.

Phil is there anything you and your wife hasn't done. :) Not trying to sound like a smart A$$. It's just you seemed to have done so much in your short time in Expediting.

While we've been expediters for a little over three years, we've hauled more freight than many. There are reasons for that.

1. We seldom go home. We try to stay in service and out on the road as much as possible. That availability opens us to more loads than we would otherwise see if we were less available.

2. We have driven FedEx White Glove equipped trucks. Liftgates, reefers, and freight handling equipment (furniture pads, straps, pallet jacks, etc) open us up to more loads than we would otherwise see if we were not so equipped.

3. We are fully-credentialled expediters with our carrier. Except for certain rare and exotic loads, we can haul any kind of freight FedEx Custom Critical handles. That opens us up to more kinds of freight from more sources.

4. We don't shy away from things that limit the kinds of loads we will haul; such as New York City, Canada, winter weather, remote areas, western states, courrier loads where a passenger rides in your truck, short runs, HAZMAT loads, long deadhead loads, etc.

All of these mean we will be exposed to a great number of freight types and opportunities in a three year period. We have not done it all and never will, but we've had great fun hauling a wide variety of freight; everything from a short run off an automotive company loading dock, to driving deep into a cave to get freight, to hauling electrical components that came FROM outer space, to delivering something nine miles deep into a national forest in Oregon; and much more.

It is one of the things we love about this business. You never know where the freight will take us next and the interesting people and places the freight will introduce us to.

While we're on the road more than most, I'm not so sure our experience is all that unique. Each expediter we've met has interesting and entertaining stories to tell.

Phil, if it was the same cave I drove my van in, it was a pretty tight fit. It must have really been tight in a truck!!!
