In a very general way, and over meaningful time periods of several months or even a year, I sometimes take note of current carrier fleet sizes and compare them to same-carrier previous levels; somewhat like retail stores compare same-store sales year-to-year.

An unusual and rapid fleet size increase or decrease would be to me a red flag that would inspire further research. A rapid increase would prompt the concern a carrier might be over-expanding the fleet for a short term carrier benefit but that might also hurt contractors in the long run. A rapid decrease might signal the loss of a key customer(s). That would have the same effect, too many trucks and too little freight for contractors to operate profitably.
