FedEx Custom Critical Transports Sea Turtle Nests From Oil Spill

FedEx Custom Critical is helping out the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in its efforts to transport hundreds of loggerhead sea turtle nests to Florida's Atlantic Coast, to protect the eggs from impacts of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

A team of biologists unearthed the first nest and transferred the eggs into specially-designed Styrofoam containers, which were then moved to the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve. From there, this nest - and another extracted from the Tyndall Air Force Base - was loaded into a FedEx Custom Critical air-ride suspension, temperature-controlled vehicle for the relocation to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The truck was driven by husband and wife driving team Ron and Margaret-Mary Shellito, who have more than 26 years of experience driving FedEx Custom Critical trucks for FedEx.

To ensure the eggs are transported safely, the trailer will be maintained at a temperature range of 80 to 90 degrees, with a set point of 85 degrees. FedEx Custom Critical worked closely with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to develop a customized packing solution inside the vehicle. A slotted aluminum floor will allow airflow for each pallet, and all pallets have been custom built to hold six containers of sea turtle eggs. They were fitted with additional cushions to dampen vibrations while in transit.

"Our support for the Gulf Coast turtle egg rescue extends our longstanding commitment to support our communities in times of need," said Virginia Albanese, president of FedEx Custom Critical. "FedEx has provided logistics expertise, in-kind shipping and funding for disaster preparedness, relief and recovery. We have worked with a number of fine organizations, and when the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation approached us to provide support for this momentous effort, we were proud to say yes."

FedEx logistics experts are working with the Unified Command and its partner organizations to implement this complex relocation, which will continue throughout the summer hatching season. The full effort is expected to result in the relocation of as many as 70,000 sea turtle eggs.

Sure..they are getting paid well to do the work...It is just more money for the Feds....whether they move bottled water, food for hurricane victims or Flu vaccine...just a job...I would have been more impressed had the Feds DONATED the truck and services tho....

Unified Command Wildlife Response Receives Support from FedEx and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for Rescue of Eggs on Gulf Coast

NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is proud to announce that FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX) is joining the efforts to protect sea turtle nests and eggs from potential impacts of the oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The company will be donating resources to transport hundreds of nests containing thousands of eggs to Florida’s Atlantic Coast, and its logistics experts are working with the Unified Command and its partner organizations to implement this complex translocation. The relocation efforts are scheduled to begin in mid-July and continue throughout the hatching season.
“Given our strong relationship with FedEx and our long-standing relationship with the federal agencies, we were able to move quickly to develop an effective plan. We’ll continue to work with all parties so that this relocation offers the best hope for sea turtles’ survival.”
FedEx is working closely with Unified Command Wildlife Branch scientists to create a safe and secure transportation solution for the relocation effort. FedEx will take great care to protect the sea turtle nests and eggs, which will travel exclusively in its FedEx Custom Critical air-ride, temperature-controlled vehicles.

I thought I had read somewhere that was happening but I was not sure.

I thought it sounded like a very cool project and it would have been fun to be involved no matter what company moved the eggs.

This is way beyond the call of duty! No snakes in the truck or in the box... NOPE Mama could have froze and I would be OK with that!

I would have been impressed if it was done anonymously. Sounds more like smart advertising. From your advertising account you donate a couple billboard's worth of "resources", and let the newswire do the rest. Warm fuzzies all around.

Yummy Turtle Soup at the Expo?

I don't think Turtle is coming to Expo!! No "Turtle soup". If you want turtle soup stop in at "Trappers" in La Salle, MI. They are on Dixie Hwy between Monroe and Erie, MI. They serve traditional Michigan "DownRiver" turtle soup. VERY GOOD!!

Turtle soup doesn't sound like anything that I would want to eat,but if I did feel so inclined to try it,it would have to be "upriver" turtle soup because as everyone knows.....EVERYTHING flows downriver.:D And La Salle is downriver from Detroit.

Oh you really need to try it one day, it is wonderful. You do have to go DownRiver to get "good" turtles, nothing good lives up "River".:p
