I been smelling the rotten egg smell from time to time so I'm sure It's close to time replace it. Do you know if he has had any plans to get it swapped out? I'm sure he wants to do it at the last minute I bet it will cost a good bit at a muffler shop.
With the primary reason for it being restricted is idling, When Dan was informed of the $1400 replacement cost at the MB dealer, his reaction was, run it till it quits. It was something about, insulating the van, using the generator that was provided for ac and heat...i dont remember exactly...
At this point, you need to get those lights checked out 100%..not at a "auto-zone" either..get and estimate of the repair cost ( def pump? cat converter?) and let Dan know...it needs to be fixed....no reason in putting it off, you don't need the continued headaches and Dan doesn't need the expense of taking it in every other week....
When you take it in, tell them there is a past history of a diagnosis of a restricted Cat and have them check that specifically (i can't believe they didnt see that when they pulled the codes last week)..and it should also be documented in the MB dealer service history system that is system wide....You said the mechanic "mentioned" that the DEF light coming on could "possibly" be the pump...did he document that??? Anytime you have that thing in the shop, make sure there is a written history of all things "mentioned" on the work order...
But once again, get it checked out and get it fixed..Oh and this isn't said to speak down to you at all, but the expense of fixing it is not your concern...Dan is a big boy and this is strictly a extra income stream for him, it is nothing more then an investment to make money..he knows he has to spend some of it from time to time....It is understandable and admirable of you to not want to spend his money, but the truck needs to be fixed and those lights out along with the proper fixes...as Larry the Cable Guy sayes, "Gett'er done"....
