Fast and Furious: US officials resign over gun sting

The acting director of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the US attorney in Arizona are resigning over a botched operation to track the flow of guns to Mexico.

The ATF's Kenneth Melson had recently faced pressure by Congress to resign.

Operation Fast and Furious saw US agents allowing thousands of guns into Mexico illegally with the hope of tracing them to major arms dealers.

But hundreds of guns went missing and dozens have turned up at crime scenes.

The operation never led to any arrests.

The US attorney in Minnesota, B Todd Jones, will replace Mr Melson.

"As a seasoned prosecutor and former military judge advocate, US Attorney Jones is a demonstrated leader who brings a wealth of experience to this position," said Attorney General Eric Holder in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Melson will be reassigned to the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Policy as an adviser on forensic science, Mr Holder added.

Arizona US Attorney Dennis Burke is to be replaced on an acting basis by his first assistant.

President Barack Obama has said that neither he nor Mr Holder authorised Operation Fast and Furious, which has sparked outrage across the US and Mexico.

Tuesday's shake-up came weeks after a Congressional report showed that at least 122 weapons recovered at crime scenes in Mexico had been linked to the sting.

A congressional investigation heard evidence that out of more than 2,000 weapons linked to Fast and Furious, some 1,400 have not been recovered.

Two of the weapons were found in Arizona in December at the scene of the killing of a US border patrol agent who was trying to catch gangs who target illegal immigrants.

When he testified to congressional investigators in July, Mr Melson acknowledged mistakes had been made.

Authorities had hoped they would be able to follow the guns to drug cartel leaders.

But ATF agents did not track the weapons after they were transferred from buyers to others who smuggled them across the border.

They need to look to the White House to find where this mess REALLY started. I wonder who paid off who to get out?

Obama is in charge at justice. Everything is HIS fault. HE is the one who should be fired. There is FAR more to this than is being reported. He is trying to justify abolishing the 2nd amendment by signing treaties with Mexico and the UN. If not abolish, just circumvent it to impose his European style gun control.

How do you abolish an amendment?

The thing is, the person or persons who had a hand in this should be going to jail, not resigning and if congress doesn't make a stink about it, then they need to be replaced.

The head of the snake said he didn't know a thing about it while he had watched gun transactions on videos...his azz needs to be in jail as does holder...

This was started under bush...but holder and barry took it to a totally knew level and you can bet they both know what was going on...whay was the head moved to another position? Because he can name holder and barry and he can show they knew what was going on...they can't dump him, well they could, but then they would have to kill him...

Just wait and see. Our government is out to do in the Constitution. They have been working on that project for years.

These kinds of things to NOT happen by accident. It always starts from the TOP. Look to the White House. Stuff flows down hill.

There are striking similarities between this mess and the Iran-Contra mess during the Reagan presidency. You can bet your bottom dollar that if this had happened during the Bush administration the Democrats and the MSM would have been screaming for a special prosecutor. Hopefully, the GOP is saving this option for next year when the campaigns are in full swing.

For the most part agree just one thing this "undercover sting"did not start untill 09 so how did this start under Bush. The way that this current president loves the blame game I belive Holder and Obama would be using this as a defence.
