I second that.
I think that a lot of companies would not care about a bunch of things but the insurance companies want to ensure that they keep liabilities to a minimal.
I know this is off topic but one thing that really bothers me is seeing these truckers get into a truck stop and 3, 4 or 5 kids get out. I find that disturbing when you think what a distraction 2 kids could be to parents driving a car, a truck is a different story and the truck is a 80 thousand pound weapon of mass destruction. If a driver is distracted by his/her kids for what ever reason and kills someone, what then? I honestly think that there should be a serious limit on who and how old the person(s) should be when it comes to OTR trucks and the insurance companies and carriers should be involved.

Two years ago I drove for an O/O who leased one truck with All State Express he and his wife would bring their 3 children all under age of 13 on the road for several weeks at a time throughout the year. They were home schooling the kids.

Unfortunately is the way with many. I've been lucky that way in that most of the companies I've been with didn't really care. I asked and most stated it's your truck, you do what you want, but don't let it interfere with a call. I got extra insc for them and they rode along. Both kids could read maps and navigate by the time they were 6 yrs old. Both kids learned on the long runs to hold their desire to go to the bathroom for hours. It got so that on the road I could do a fuel stop even with kids and keep it down to 20 minutes from time slowdown to back up on the highway. This meant fuel, bathroom break and food purchase, done.
To say the least it was entertaining having the kids along. I do miss some of the interaction we had. They did learn a lot. My daughter works for a courier company and they were amazed at her knowledge of the business. Now she gets involved with the hiring of drivers and has devised a test and screens them for attitude.

E-1 has a passenger policy and a permission(waiver) slip must be issued. You can always purchase extra passenger insurance.

Last time i was with E-1 the rule was the passenger had be 18.
Family? Friendly? EXPEDITING? Companies? Where in the world do you people come from, as far as background and socialization. Is there any git"r'done initiative anymore?? It would be neat to allow this lady the OPPORTUNITY to splain to Donald Trump WHY Trump couldn't open his $4 Billion Casino because the sign was late on my husbands truck because my child . . . . ........... MAN!! Would I like to watch that.

What does wanting to take a child with you have to do with not having initiative? I fail to see the connection here.
There's nothing wrong with taking a child, or your wife or both with you, if ground rules are established and everyone knows the priorities when under load.
I've did both in the past, as have many I'm sure. It sure made the trip more pleasant! It gave them all a different perspective on what I did.
Let's be careful not to let negativity overcome the advice. Just because it's not one person's priority, does not mean it's not important to others.

Well.... No. Guess i'm typing about the unperffional ones. Which accounts for 90% plus.
The successful folks on this site have always aluded to the fact that, we need to be business people first, then chase the truck driving and lifestyle later. I think, I have that right.

Kernal, I think you're letting your inner-curmudgeon get away from you on this one. A pro is a pro at all times. Even if his family is with him. Back in the '80s I drove a T/T on a regular run from Walled Lake, Mi. to Olive Branch, Ms. I took my wife and oldest boy, then 5, on a weekend trip. As Dreamer pointed out, it gave my wife a lot of perspective, and the wide eyed thrill it was for a 5 year old is something I'll always remember.
Oh yes, a week end trip from MI to MS once or twice is wonderful, when you are not pressed for time etc. etc. In fact, I encourage that type of demonstration. However, seems to me, the intent here is for the kid to live with him in the truck on a continual basis. Not at all a good thing, and a real potential for disaster for everyone involved on the long term. But, hey, help yourself. Won't happen here tho.

Sorry guys but my experience yesterday proved to me that there is little place in a truck for brats on the road.
I was going down I-8 last night on my way to deliver in Phoenix and here comes this truck catching up behind me. He goes to pass me and as he gets right next to me I see this kid jump up out of the passenger seat, I just knew what was going to happen next, I slam on my brakes to let him get past me, the next thing I know the truck makes a sharp right off the road while locking up his brakes – make a big mess in the desert and coming to a complete stop in a cloud of sand. I pull over and the driver gets out of his truck and walks over to me. When he gets to my truck, I ask him what happened and here is what he tells me “my kid got up out of his seat and he lost his balance and grab the steering wheel and he is all shook up because I had to stop and he fell on the floor, I think he got scared†I told him his kid should get his a** whipped for that stunt and his response was he can’t spank his kid for that, he lost his balance and that was not his fault.
Now this is the second time something like this has happened to me yesterday, the first was with a pair U haul trucks going down the road and passed me. As the second one pass me, the driver almost ran me completely off the road. I caught up to both trucks at the truck stop and asked the couple while they were in line in front of me why they tried to kill me – I got a really dumb look on their face until I told them I was the one they ran off the road. I found out that the second one was being driven by the woman who had her toddler and three year old in the truck with her and the three year old dropped his bottle and she reached down to pick it up - no apology for what happened, no “hope you are alrightâ€, no nothing. She and her dumb a** husband just stood there without a clue when I said that she should have left the thing on the floor and let the kid suffer, it was better than killing someone.
I can understand an occasional trip, like taking one kid with you or your wife and one kid, but I also think that this entire idea of making trucking a family affair is BS and having kids not buckled in, in car seats or more than two should be a concern for all on the road. To me professionalism is a life style of seriousness and concern for everyone involved. In the case of the first example, I think that this guy is no where near what a professional driver should act like, the latter example is the reason we have lobotomies and sterilization – those people should not be allowed to breed.
I do agree with Dreamer though, establish the rules first but if you can’t control your kids don’t bring them because the life you take because of something stupid that happens in the cab may be mine.

My meds are fine... if you'd read... you'd read, she is looking for nuther Carrier because there is always more to it than once or, anuther. Would you pass your Carrier of choice for once or twice, or, would it be anuther??? It's an interesting game with people, you may not understand. Know what the price of sitters is these days???
I don't disagree with any of you about little kids, safety or frequency of trips. But I would have liked it if FECC had allowed my 18 year old son to ride with me a couple of weeks this summer before he starts college. He is a legal adult and I fail to see the problem with it.
I recently read a true article in a Canadian magazine about a driver that decided to take his 5 year old daughter on a quick turn around trip . Along the way she started crying she had an "accident " in her pants . They were on a 2 lane with no shoulder . He decided it would be o.k. to stop on a straight stretch and put his flashers on . He took his daughter out on the passenger side and heard a crash . A car tryig to come around him was hit by another car and wedged under his truck and caught fire , killing the occupant and destroying his rig .
Last week on I-275 in Michigan I moved out of the right lane to let a Rouel rig enter from a ramp . He sped up and hung me out in the lane until I passed a slower truck then he went by me about 10 m.p.h. over the speed limit . As he passed I could see a girl about 6 years old in the passenger seat . Atta boy , Dad . Too bad Smokey wasn't around .
