explain how this is fair

The guy I've been driving for for panther since Jan 06 has decided to give me the van Ive been in since then. 2003 ford 350 with 620k miles on it. He called panther to see what has to be done. Theres the legal crap as far as transfer. I get that. Then he informs me that instead of $.77 a mile I would get $.70 a mile. Ive been with panther since 8/05 got fairly high numbers as far as acceptence, safety 100% on time. How can they justify a 10% cut in the rate Im not a new driver with no experience. In addition to the 3.5+ years with panther I also had 3.75 years with FECC. While this may result in a $.19.5 a mile jump in pay. It my not seem like much, however with the additional fees of qc, bobtail insurance and what ever else fees they charge I also need a maintenence/new van fund that that extra $.07 would help fund. Anybody else heard of this? I was thinking about leaving till my owner decided to give me the van, but when he mentioned giving it to me I sort of changed my mind. Now again Im not so sure. How is this justified seeing as Im not a new hire? Is it legal? what would you do in my position seeing as nobody is hiring especially a 6 year old van with 620,000 miles on it.

I'm confused: who said the rate would be lower, the owner, or Panther? And what was the reason given for the reduction?

He informed you? What does Panther say? It is going to be YOUR contract with Panther...not his...

Is .70 the new rate for ALL new recruits?

Both the owner and someone at panther. havent gotten ahold of the recruiter my owner spoke with but someone who couldnt really explain why.

That's what's confusing me - neither the van nor the driver is 'new' - just the ownership is changing hands. Is that something like a loophole that can be exploited to force a lower rate on the contractor?:(

apparently its the new rate but they arent taking on any new vans only a year and a half too late. appearently a new contract

It is a simple question for Panther...is the contract rate .70 or .77?

Your owner has nothing to do with this....you should be dealing with Panther for your side of the biz.

Opps. your quick! *LOL*

well...old contract was between someone else...it is a new contract...guess they'd be justified...but they could cut you a break because of the way it is going...

Must be I cant get anyone at panther to explain/justify it to me. Leave it to these people to nickel and dime a driver every chance they can

The loophole is the new contract as of whatever date. That doesn't make it right since it's not but that's the answer I suspect. If you have a good enough relationship with the current owner you could ask him to keep it on his contract and pass the pay along to you with him keeping maybe 2-3 cents a mile for the favor. You'd come out a few cents better that way. Your other option is to talk to someone high enough on the Panther food chain to override the system and get it reset to 77 cents. Good luck.

Leos correct....IF your record is as good as you say you MIGHT just get an over-ride....at least you could try...Good Luck

Optimism is good - but asking a carrier to give more money than they absolutely have to is delusional, IMO. And probably grounds for a 'reasonable suspicion' drug screen, lol. ;)

My line of thinking goes this way...they still have some on the old .85 cent contract..if they were so nasty why not just give notice and make them re-sign at new rate?

So now there's 4 different contracts floating around out there that I know of
1. .85
2. .77
3. non Canada rate
4. .70
