i,m starting my third week in expiditing .....i have no expiditing and almost no otr expiriance i,m told i am doing very well i worked at fed ex ground for five years though and know how to drive the truck and how to make deliverys on time though

Great to hear John, But you have the understanding and the concept of being on time for a load. Some drivers will go pick up and load head to the truck stop for a sit down dinner when the load is a straight threw load. The load ends up being late because the driver doesn't get it. You can tell some people till your blue in the face and they just don't understand.

This was an eye opener to me, back in the days when i moved from Trucking to Expedite.
no Expedite carrier ever consider my trucking driving record.

this was not the case in the Big trucks world.
the trucking industry is soo BIG there's always exceptions to the rules, but for the most parts, a company drivers get pay by experience, and O/O without years of clean records will never be contracted by carriers that pay well.
shippers for the most parts pay better, for carriers with strikers contract/retention guidelines.
i see this every day now.

the load boards don't care, but that's not where the money is to begin with.

i am not aware of even one Expedite carrier to ever send a newbie back, do to luck of experience, but can only assume that if some will start doing just that, along with some marketing skills, they will see better rates, and dedicated shippers, willing to pay more for the peace of mind knowing the freight is moved by true professionals.

there for i have to agree with the OP,
but also have to say we bring this on our selves .
when a carrier will start to pick & choose contractors, base of experience, they will quickly see better rates, and serve top quality costumers.
kind of work smarter not harder.

I put a newbie solo in my first truck, and he did an awesome job. Couldn't have asked for any better. To this day he's the best driver I've ever had.

This could explain the calloused hands mentioned in another thread.

"Experience" can be many things, when I decided I would make a Second career out of trucking, I went to a trucking school, the instructors were darn good, they covered many REAL LIFE issues besides the curriculum the state and the school was to teach, I got a job driving a Flatbed and had to ride with a guy until he decided I could actually handle the truck, he got out in 2 days....Ive been driving trucks for the Concert Sound business since i was 18, By the time I was 25 I had been in every state in the nation.

I drove Flatbed and Driveaway when the Sound Biz was slow....I actually took a 5 year hiatus from the Sound Biz during the last economic depression 99-05, and managed to keep my company and my bills paid, now Ive decided to sell off my sound biz and go full time expediting. Experience from driving trucks, from being around truckers, truckstops, trucking business etc....its all added up to a good education of LIFE on the road. We all know some folks are not cut out for this way of life, or to be left ALONE with No supervision etc.

Ive filled out enough applications etc to realize that most companys when they say experience is CAN YOU HANDLE THE JOB .....Make On time deliverys, stay off the cherry machines, out of the back row at truck stops, manage your finances, Keep fuel in the truck and manage the maintanence, are you smart enough to know when tires, belts, hoses etc are bad.....Are you smart enough to take care of your equipment and yourself....experience is many things, Can you make a Business succeed, Can you keep a companies reputation intact and be a company Bee....

A bunch of companys on a resume doesnt mean you have experience, possibly it means just the opposite....
