Interested in know opinions on which of the following two areas would be better to be based out of in a Sprinter/ Box truck under 10,000k.

1) Youngstown, Oh (more auto factory loads)?
2) Laurel, Md (more gov loads)?

Thanks!

I can only comment on Youngstown, pretty easy getting loads in. Getting loads out not as easy.

Is the vehicle going to be following the freight or coming home every night? Is this vehicle going to have it's own customer base or be leased on with a carrier who will find the freight?

I would be following freight and would be leased to one of the middle or larger carriers. Just wanted to know which area would be more active of the two.

Thanks.

I would rather be in Ohio myself. Either place is workable if you have reason to live in MD.

It would almost be a coin toss for me, but Ohio is more central to the known universe of expediting, some would like that. However, if you stay in the center, the longest loads can only take you half way across the circle. Live on the edge of the circle and there is always the chance of the long loads across the circle. If I had the choice between two places, I'd just try to use both--which ever happened to be closer at the time. How's that for wobbly advice. Here's another consideration. If I had to be home for whatever reason on a regular basis, like once or twice a month, I'd go with the central location. If not, it doesn't really matter where I would live--freight-wise.

Then each carrier has different customers that might sway the decision. But I wouldn't put too much into this, because even if I found a relatively dead area for a particular carrier as my "home base", I might be able to help the carrier develop a customer base in the new area, at worst I'd learn where to find the closest freight from there.

Thanks for all the info!

I was leaning towards Ohio because its more central as you said.
My sister is in MD so I can always have a place to stay if I am down on the weekend.

Unless you are planning on being home on a "regular basis", what difference does it make?...I mean you are going to deliver somewhere and sit...chances are you aren't going to get dispatched back home even a few times a week if a few times a month, depending on the carrier, unless you are one that is going to be DH'ing home after each run....I live in Toledo, home to more then a few Expedite companies...my chances of getting a regular dispatch from here is not that great..at one point, i would DH to Chicago from home to get loaded....

We all know the OVM lives in Bison SD...it doesn't make any difference, he runs all over the country and goes home from time to time but other then that where he lives doesn't matter....and for most people in this business, its the same way... home or where you are based out of, really isn't a big deal...and then take the carrier into the consideration...you might not see home for months on end, depending on the type of unit you drive...just food for thought...
