Expedite vs Truckload/Less Than Truckload

I have been looking into the rates of each type of trucking. Granted, this is aimed at E units. From what I see in rates in expedite for loaded miles...it seems the average pay is about $1.50/mile. (basic rate+fsc) For a lot of the TL/LTL companies, most pay about $1.18/mile again basic rate plus fsc loaded or DH.

Working from a solo drivers perspective, which would be the best situation? From what I see, it would depend on the DH required. If your expedite and get a 350 mile run but have to DH 150 miles and get 0.00 for the 150...then your total 500 mile run ($1.50/loaded mile) would pay $1.05/mile. Total income of $525.00 If you are TL/LTL you would get $1.18 for all of it, that would = $590.00

Granted, that is just one hypothetical example. I am sure there are situations that would show expedite paying more. But, are there more headaches with expedite and worrying about the required DH? What are the pit falls of TL/LTL other than the potential of driving more for about the same income? (keeping in mind driving more obviously means working harder, higher fuel cost, and more wear on the vehicle)

Jayman,I think you answered your own question. The advantages of expediting over TL/LTL is less driving less fuel costs and less wear and tear on your vehicle.

Also if you are deadheading 150 miles and not getting at least SOME pay to help pay the fuel costs involved, then you are working for the wrong company.

Also when we get a run offer we figure it by ALL miles driven (DH and loaded)and if the pay for all miles is too low then we refuse it.

I agree and that is what I do when figuring out the load pay - dead head miles plus actual trip miles.
If the pay does not meet my requirements on pay I turn it down. Now, if it gets me out of a slow area and maybe I have been sitting to long or it gets me back into the main service area of the company I would consider it.

I'm wandering where he got the 1.50/mile,for expediting,I've averaged,$2.14/loaded mile for the year, pulling their trailer.
guys, its not work harder,it's work smarter.
