looks like a good time already. Do you know if the mobile wash crew is going to be there tomorrow also? Or is there a wash near the convention center?

The truck wash guy said he would be there tomorrow. He is set up in back of the convention center by the loading docks. Howerver, if you can get the truck washed on the way in, it would be better. For the time it takes, price you pay and quality of work done, a drive-through truck wash is better. The crew started out fine early in the day but by the end of the day when I got my turn their heart was not in the work. :(

Well, enough of that. On to tonight's reception and some networking with the exhibitors. :)

The FECC truck in the top photo was at PJ's in canton 2 days ago. That has got to be the strangest looking freight box in the fleet, side doors on both sides of it.

They couldn't even place the Fedex decal on the drivers side of the box in the correct location because of the side door.

Phil, thanks for the info. I guess I will get it done on the way in. Closest wash that I could find since we are coming from the south is in Walton, KY. I'll just try not to hit any bugs on the way there after the wash.

I thought that FECC does not allow side doors on the box for security reasons (drug loads, etc). At least that's what I was told when shopping for a reefer trailer to lease on. The truck in the first photo of this thread clearly does. Appearently that no longer holds true?

I don't know about that Streakn, but this truck is a dry box not a reefer.Unless he has his reefer unit hidden somewhere.

Maybe for a motorcycle, or moving apartments when he can't get loaded. Outside of that I would see little use. If it is for the cycle, would have done better buying the full blown toy hauler and leave the freight on the dock.

Before more consipiracy theories are spread, here's the skinny on the "strange" box.

My wife and I had this unit built. It's been in the works since last year. The original plan was to build a Demountable (demount.com / Demountable Concepts) Segregated box (removable partition in the middle). The side doors would accomodate (they are 5' wide) unloading the front compartment (was going to be a D unit split into 12'/10' compartments) w/out breaking the seal on the rear compartment. We had specific targets for this freight in mind. The Demountable idea is something anyone that hauls AA&E regularly would understand the use for (I'd rather sleep in my home than a hotel).

In the end, the Defense Ammunition Center wanted over $20k to trash my truck on their course to prove in the concepts/design. Keep in mind this is a 30 yr old technology that is being used by the Navy, etc. It is what it is though. I'm x-military and understand what happened and why.

We decided to leave the doors on the box.... so there is no conspiracy to "screw" anyone out of anything or be treated special... they are just DOORS folks.

I've fielded all sorts of questions as to what "special deal" I have cooking with FECC, or what "special project" I'm involved in. It's sad that we all are so competitive in this field that we assume that someone is "sneaky" or "foolish for such a decision". This is one of the reasons I've done a lot of reading on these forums over time... but never participated. Things just get to personal and ugly sometimes.

It's just two doors that I had specific reasons to keep on the unit. If you don't see the reasoning, you indeed are entitled to your opinion and I respect the fact we all have to do what we feel is best for our individual businesses - the same way we all flow with specific freight that we tend to run. That's one of the cool things about this industry... we have the freedom to choose what we chase.

The sad part of all of this is that I've hurt nobody doing this. Yet we are somewhat villified simply because we did something "different". We're sharing our home... not for monetary gain or anything political... but because we think others might like to do the same thing we have and we basically thought it might help some morale in our segment of the industry.

To address those who may be concerned about our earning ability with a non-reefer unit (I've heard some pretty mean comments already), we're not knew, we have our eyes wide open, we have our own unique plans for the truck (beyond FECC) and *we* are happy with the truck... thrilled actually.

We are excited to be a part of this show... but I'm not much of a socializer so if you don't see me hanging around, you now know why. Do stop by and see the truck though... you may like it.

We hope everyone that gets to come enjoys the show!

Be safe out there.

Geekridge,
I actually was there and checked out your truck tonight, during the setup.

Very cool concept, and I could definately see uses for it.

Folks, just because you don't "get it" or don't see the use for it in YOUR way of doing things, please don't trash other's concept or way of doing business.

Do business your way and don't trash people who do it THEIR way.

GR.. cool truck, I'll stop and talk to ya tomorrow. Look for the big guy LOL.

Dale,I didn't really see where we were trashing him. It's just the nature of truck drivers that when they see something different,we are gonna talk about it.

I suspect that the first man in America that wore a pierced earring was also discussed in great detail,it's just human nature.

GR if what is posted in this thread has somehow offended you, maybe you have chosen the wrong occupation.

I gotta go now,I think I hear the black helicopters near my house.

If my comment on this subject provoked any part of this response on your part, this was not my intent. Rather it was to ask if FECC was changing the rules regarding this.

In our five years leased to FECC this was not allowed on ANY unit to our knowledge (according to recruiting and WG). Knowing from our own experience, FECC is an ever evolving carrier. This is to stay competitive and keep an edge on the market, I only wondered if this was a new edge on the market for them using old technoligy. Yes A&E has been shipped this way for years in Drom (splg) boxes secure to open decks.

No worries here, not hurting us. I'll stick to haulin my jet engines and aircraft parts (they don't blow up). Plus I don't have to worry about the terrorist trying to steal my truckload of explosives!

Anyway, interesting truck build.

Let's see... One poster says the box looks strange. Well, it is highly unusual in the expedite world. Another says that he thought the doors weren't allowed, simply wondering if what he heard was wrong or had been changed. Another said he couldn't see any use for the doors.

Could someone show me where the trashing is? Personal attacks? Where?

ROTFLMAO!!!...

Nice truck, I've seen it a couple times.

But.... with FedEx it all depends on who you talk to what is allowed and what isn't.......even within FedEx.....

.............and as always, there are exceptions to the rules......
