Just my thinking, Depends who ya talk to.
Carrier/recruiter may tell you,,Yes we have pleanty of work. They will always have the answer in their top pocket. Once your onboard they will think nothing of selling the freight to another carrier. I just received word that a carrier dropped its rates to the truck by a nickel, overnight, no discussion, take it or leave it.
Talk to a driver that has no expenses of operating a truck and he may say he/she is doing OK.
Talk to a Truck manufacturer/ advertisers they may tell you there is so much work that you can't afford not to buy a truck..
No easy answer right now.. Im Certainly not seeing that the work load is here like it has been in the past.
