Welcome to the "Left Coast"

San Mateo this morning.

So.....you want to take your auto industry buyout and jump into the freight business? Be careful.

I'll be more willing to help you put together a highly fuel efficient truck to help offset the ever increasing costs that are a huge consideration in this business, if you are certain this is the route for you.

A locomotive engine burns roughly 4.5 gallons per hour at idle.

The US Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) provides fuel consumption data for locomotives and shows that overall in the US trains got .06 miles per liter which translates to .14 miles per gallon, or about 7 gallons per mile. Tonnage, grade and speed are the factors. Running full out at Run 8 (maximum throttle) will use 180-200 gallons per mile. Run 8 can be at 70 MPH or at 15 MPH, just depends on the grade and tonnage.

Actually I think .06 m/l would be about .22 m/g or about 4.5 gallons per mile. Still a lot but somewhat more reasonable.

I'm not too worried about the railroads taking over. I'm parked at a Wal Mart and I think those are dock doors in the back and it doesn't look like there are railroad tracks leading to the docks either. Trains can move a lot of freight across country, but it still has to get from the rail yards to where it's being delivered.

Oil went over $105 a barrel today. Looks more and more like the projections by the ones in the know are edging toward $4 a gallon for diesel by Spring (If not sooner). Part of the problem per the news was stocks are down and the yuppies are putting their money in petroleum driving the price up. I don't know, I no longer play the market. Took the money and ran. But what I do see is prices on everything going out the roof over these oil prices. I do not however believe that rates will increase and I believe the FSC will struggle to keep up as shippers feel the crunch. Not doom and gloom just my opinion. It's gonna get tougher out here I'm thinking. Batten down the hatches and watch you loose change, you might just need it. I know I am watching mine.

About 5-6 years ago Shell Oil wanted to double the size of their refinery in Bakersfield CA. Within one month of announcing their plans 147 lawsuits were filed aginst the project by the various California tree huggers,Enviro wackos and so on. One lady in San Francisco filed over 30 on her own. So Shell basically said screw you cancelled the project and can you blame them.

Yes the price of oil is up, the speculation price that is

Yes I just paid $4 a gallon to fuel up - 115 gallons....you do the math

Yes we have limited capacity in refining oil

Yes we have a lot of domestic oil sources but we are not allowed to use the or drill for them, we are not allowed to even think about drilling for them

Yes the government is the real cause of the prices, not the oil companies. Their intervention in environmental issues, in domestic taxes and other areas have driven the price too far up

Yes we are all fools not to be complaining to the government to get out of the oil business and stay out - this is not the 1920's, this is not the old economy, this is a new world....

Yes we should fight for the proper education on what is going on and fight the propaganda from the political parties, the candidates and the congress

To solve the problem;

Government has to stop telling the oil companies where to drill. We should be able to drill in the Arctic, in the gulf and in my back yard if there is oil there.

Government needs to remove some of the taxes, resturctre the way the taxes are spent, and put limits on the use of the money that the states receive.

Government needs to take a serious look at the EPA charter and change it to include economic impact studies before implementing policies. No one seems to remember that the EPA DOES NOT have to look at what impact their policies have on our economy, NO OTHER COUNTRY DOES THIS AND NO OTHER COUNTRY IS DICTATED BY ENVIRONMENTAL AGENCIES.

Government needs to rein in states who don't allow us to idle, who tell us what equipment we can and can not use for interstate commerce and make their own rules.

AND

People need to grow up and take responsibility to educate themselves on this and other issues before even considering to have the government do a thing about our problems other than get out of the way.

The real idiots are the people, they have fallen for the idea that there is global warming, that we live in the worst, most polluted country in the world and that we must put our efforts into energy alternatives right now but they don't want to first solve the real problem that we are facing us today, our energy sources. It seems that they don't want to face reality when it comes to drilling for oil or Natural Gas. It seems that they are so worried about ANWR that they would rather have $6 a gallon fuel - a place I might add that the average person will never ever see in their lives so who really cares.

Makes me wish we could charge the government under the monopoly rules; and charge Congress under RICO. Of course we can't, as they've written laws that protects themselves. Uggh... the irony!!!

I have hope that someone some day will change the way the government treats the working class. But, it won't happen in my lifetime. This great nation will have to fall flat of its azz before the politicians will change. Even then someone will have to call them and tell them it happened. They do not have a clue. It is sad but so.

I agree to this and would also add the oil speculators "The Money people" Just because the Houston channel was closed for 2 days doesn't make fuel jump 2 cents a gallon!! Somehow the WORLD powers have to dilute the effect of speculators, They are hurting not only us but everyone around the globe.

Might want to consider converting your straight truck to a tanker and start hauling tax free fuel up from the border.

Man- squeezing budget is an understatement...! I am barely getting by, as fuel surcharges always either lag behind, or we are locked into low-rate charges that take forever to get up to even .30c a gallon for some accounts. It really may get to the point of shutdown or go belly up!
Looking for a way to cut my truck payments- only 1.5 yrs to go. F.Y.I. any of you in this boat should know that if you can put a chunk down from whatever source, you can probably "re-finance" your note and cut your payments.

I was out of the country in China for personal reasons, and when I got back it was like a new reality had hit. Speculators are the biggest reason now for the rapid rise at the pump: the greedy bastards are jumping out of the sub-prime mess and going into fuel to reap profits. OPEC correctly stated they do not have control of pricing anymore.

Do not be surprised to see wildcat action as this evolves.... I won't be...
