Electric fan conversion

Has anyone tried an electric fan kit? I searched for it but didn't find anything.

I had a buddy that did this to Toyota p/u he had. He claimed some mpg improvement, but I don't remember how much. I think he had to manually turn his fan on and off with a toggle switch, but I'm sure you could get a thermostat controlled switch?

Do they work...help mpg?

I have used them in street rods but not in the trucks...they are available to be "temp controlled" by a thermostatic switch..as for MPG, I am sure you'd get something just not sure how much...

i can only figure you are thnk of using one on your new Cargo Max...So, keep in mind, Space to mount one is a "premimum" on a van..not much of it between the belts and the rad and there is a "External Tramission Cooler" between the radiator and the gill right in the center on the outside...you'd have to fab brackets t move that , but still making sure it in a area where it will get good airflow as to allow it to cool the trans fluid as is needed to keep from over heating the trans..

Heat build up in a "van" is just part of the deal because of how the engine is shrouded and setback and that also allws hot air to collect around bothe the engine and the trans.. the engine mounted fan is not "clutched" and moves anytime the engine is running at a direct speed which allows it to move a large amount of air, where the electric fan being swithch is only on when the tem of the coolant is at or above at pre-set temp..that allows hot air to not move as well as it should and can cause other heat related issues....

I google'd electric fan conversion kits and tons of stuff came up.

Try searching for FF dynamics as that is one company that talks about installing electric fans on city plow trucks with diesel engines. You were considering this setup for your straight truck weren't you?

Yeap Rocketman got tired of his ST gettin knocked around so he went and bought himself a CargoMax!!

In the UltraMaxx thread on the main page:

There is a CargoMax sitting at Weber Chevrolet in St. Louis, MO on Olive street off of I-270. I know it is there cuz they ordered it in for us but they were not able to get it in time so we ended up with a Chevy Express. The CargoMax came in a couple of days ago. The sales guy, Paul Huch called and said it finally came in, it's too late for us but someone might get it for a good price. I know they didn't want to stock this one. Best wishes to whom ever gets it. They are a nice rig.

Hard to believe,he has gone over to the "dark side".:D

Kinda nervous about it. I'm just hoping the extra capacity will keep it moving. The ST has been good to me, but I want a change.

I've been hit 3 times in less than a year in the truck stops. The same front fender twice and the last time they got the back corner of the box.

Anybody need a good Straight truck with a slightly bent up box? lol

That seems to be the key for me...While the factory "INCOMPLETE" gvw sticker list the chassis at 12,300 lb the FINAL Stage unfitter Lawful GVW sticker list it at 10,000 GVW and takes the truck out of the DOT Commerical Motor Vehicle regulations. Knowing the chassis is able to handle the larger heavier loads then almost all CV's and more then a realistic Sprinter owner would take on a regular basis leave the door open for me to carry what they can't or won't....its that "tweener" deal...bigger then the CV's / Sprinters, smaller then the majority of ST's, but able to carry smaller ST loads...

The ability to carry the heavier loads (and not worry about it in any way) lets the carried bid a bit lwer then they would for a ST but higher then a CV/ Sprinter...everybody makes out....

You will do well in the CargoMax Rocketman...just forget the ST Mentality, throw away the logbooks, forget the Scale houses and those roadside DOT inspections....and run the wheels off of it!!:)

Oh and yea you will hear from those whining that you are running overloaded from time to time...so well...Stay within the 12,300 GVW and the truck will handle it , no problem...:)

Someone posted this for me awhile back when I asked about them.
Electric Fan Engineering : Electric and Hydraulic Fans, Radiators, Charged Air Coolers, Heat Exchangers, Body Climate Control Systems
I did send them a e-mail but never got a reply, maybe your luck will be better,,ether way there is some info that may help ya there.

I haven't gone to one or followed up on one due to our prospering economy, that is demanding my money goes elsewhere.
I have talked to allot of ppl and hear good things about a savings. Some ppl that sounded like they knew something about them (heavy truck use) recommend putting it on your A/C side for idling and leaving the regular fan clutch in place for road use.

Any load over 10k is overloaded and illegal though if the upfitters tag says 10k.

We've been there done that and got the damage estimates to prove it, so we spend very little time in the truckstops, and NEVER overnight in them.

The last time we were hit was in the RV lot at the Baytown J by a hit and run truck so we stick to Cracker barrels, wally worlds and Sams clubs pretty much exclusively.

That's what my game plan will be now too. I just never felt comfortable parking at those places in the ST. I always felt like someone was going to run me off. Getting run off doesn't bother me, getting woke up at 10am after delivering at 7am bothers me...then of course, that creates a logbook problem if your a solo.

You didn't comment on my BR unit idea? Looks workable to me?

Well if it doesn't work out with the Fed, you could always stock the freezier with "steaks and seafood" and sell it on the corner!!! :D

Just be sure to put a fake reefer unit on the roof, and no one would know that you were using a freezer. Our buddy Steve from N' Hampsha' was in a BR unit for the last year and a half, and was doing pretty good with it.
