Has anyone ever purchased anything on Ebay? I just bought a Truckers' Co-pilot software, but I have no idea what the best way to pay for it is? I've bid on a lot of things on ebay, but this is the first thing I've ever won...lol.

Thx,

I like to use paypal (www.paypal.com) Its free and you can either use a credit card or it can directly take it out of your bank account. Also you could send a personal check (most sellers will hold item till check clears) or a money order. If you want to avoid the hassle of signing up with paypal I'd recommend the check/money order route. I have used all 3 types buying and selling with good luck. Feel free to email me if you have any problems.

I have literally bought and sold thousands of items on ePay. I will second Sterling on his suggestions. However, most sellers will not accept checks so the money order route is likely best for you. If you plan on buying more goodies on ePay then PayPal membership is useful. Some sellers who normally would not accept a check might if you ask them nicely and agree to wait for it to clear.

There are lots of fraudsters out there so sellers are becomming more cautious about what payment forms they accept. Also, there are loads of crooks whom may try to get your sensitive information (its called 'phishing') so beware if you do open a PayPal account and never give your personal details to anyone. No matter who they claim to be.

Paypal is easy and safe with a credit card. The mechanics are that you, the buyer, pay to paypal and then paypal pays the seller. The seller never sees your credit card info. Also, my visa card issuer, gaurantees the transaction thru ebay if I use the credit card. 100% money back if there would be a hitch. I´m sure other cards provide the same service.I would avoind the check or money order route and go strictly paypal, and credit card.

thx for the info. ... I'm probably going to set up a paypal account. Might as well, I'm thinking of buying a laptop off ebay too. It kinda scares me, but that way, if something was to happen on the raod (as in drop, crash, burn) I wouldn't have so much invested :) .

Thx again for the help:):):)

Arky,
I strongly advise you to use PayPal. It is gauranteed by ebay if something should happen and you don't get what you paid for.

I have a personal horrow story regarding an outdrive I bought on ebay. I sent a personal check for payment in full and almost 1 year later I still haven't recieved the unit, just BS excuses. That was a big ticket item, and I really don't know what to do about it! That was a very expensive lesson!!!! Beware!!!!

thx,

I did use paypal. There was an interesting twist that came about. A friend at work was telling me that he had bought something once and when it came time to pay for it, they wanted him to send the paypal to a different email address than they had posted when the listed the item for sale (supposedly they were selling for someone else and mistakenly entered the wrong email). He did send the money to the other address and had no problems.

Imagine this..Yesterday, when I got an email from the seller, she wanted me to send the paypal to a different email address..lol. She was selling this co-pilot for her b/f and mistakenly entered her email instead of his when creating the listing. Is there a reason for them wanting to do this?

After reading ebay's policy's concerning security of your purchases using paypal through ebay, I decided to send the money to the original email address and not the second one. I figure it like this, if they want to sell their co-pilot (I was the only bidder), she can surely get the money to her boyfriend. Or they can refuse the payment and I don't spend any money :). She took the paypal to her account. Now if I don't get the merchandise, I have at least some protection.

paypal will let you enter something like 5 e-mail addresses on one paypal account so all they would have to do it add the "mistaken" address to the old paypal account.

If you mailed a check then the postal inspectors could lock them up for mail fraud. A genuine 'Federal' offense!

TWmaster,

Excellent advice, I believe I'll look into that. I don't know why I didn't think of that! Sometimes you just get too close to a problem and you can't see the forrest for the trees.

Thanks,
Bill

Just a quick note,
Please be careful when you join paypal or ebay. Of course you know ebay owns paypal now. Anyways, watch out for the fake emails that you might receive--coming from so@[email protected] or paypal.com asking you to click on a link to update your profile and credit card info. Big scam. They make it look like its really coming from paypal or ebay site.Just a little heads up.

Everyone's advice is great, but watch buying hardware(laptop)there has been notable cases of people getting screwed. Ebay has been great for me, if you use common sense in your dealings you will have a great experience.(check out the Swarovski A.E.)
