I don't know what all the Hooyaa is about in regards to Con-Way-Now's FSC practices. I run a "D" unit, with a co-driver. Every load offer I receive, I get $1.21 per mile + a FSC of $.18 for the week beginning April 9th. Last week, the week ending April 8th, I got my $1.21 per mile + $.17 per mile FSC. This weeks FSC is based on an average of $2.61 nationwide average per gal. This means that if I average 8 miles to the gallon, which is a realistic average, including idle time, the price I pay per gallon, on an average, will be $1.25 if my math is correct. Based upon what FSC is meant to be, I am pleased to know that at any given time and on any given day that I will not ever have to run a load that I will not know my exact cost per mile, up front, without speculation or calculation. I know the miles are correct, if not inaccurate in my favor. Therefore, I will never have to refuse a load due to inadequate FSC offerings. I shouldn't have to!
I do understand that there is question as to whether or not Con-Way is making money on FSC. I would venture to guess that if you figured it out over the period of a year or any significant amout of time longer than, that you will find a fairly balanced "pool".
FSC is not designed to pay for all of your fuel, it's design is to assist and level the playing field for all carriers. If a company can get a better price on fuel via volume discount, more power to them, and more power to you if they pass that discount on to you.
My understanding of Con-Way-Now's practices are, if I am not making money, then they are not making money. I know, for a fact, that they have lost money on loads(more than one), to keep me moving, to keep me happy, TO KEEP ME, period. I have only one truck. If they do this for me then they do it for everybody, which means they have lost alot of money on alot of loads, just to keep their fleet happy. Just to keep their fleet period. So if they make a few dollars to the good after a year or more, off of the FSC, good for them. They can use that money next year to Keep me moving, Keep me Happy, Keep me period.
