So was I.
As harsh as this will sound, I don't care about the idiot who gets drunk and behind the wheel - there is no excuse for it. I want to stop him/her before something happens not after. The law is supposed to also deter people.
I feel the driving laws are so lax that they allow people who can't drive to drive, an example was my uncle who was blind in one eye and had cataracts so badly that he used to hit things all the time. My Aunt would be his eyes and for some reason at the age of 73, he passed the road test with no problems. The ended the road test about a year after that and the next renewal, he passed the vision test with out any problem, even making up numbers and letters for his blind eye.
Another example is working with someone who was worst than my Uncle (could not see a thing passed his nose) and drove a motor home with a tag up to Mount Pleasant every weekend, a 150 mile drive. One day a few of us were returning after our day shift and at our entrance was parked a new Neon (less than 2000 miles on it) with the hood crumpled up and leaking all types of fluid, we knew who's car it was but when he was asked what happened, he said he hit a curb. Well he kind of hit a truck, plowed into it when it was stopped and he was going 30. The air bags didn't deploy (A feature with that model) but he did make it back the mile and a half like nothing happened. He was not given a ticket and didn't get fired for some reason, back on the road the next week. He however also did pass his vision test with no problems. He wasn't drunk but blind.
