How many times while enroute to California on I-80 were you stopped at Verdi,NV because Donner Pass was closed or at the very least required you to chain up due to snow and ice conditions? Rather than take a chance did you pull into Boomtown and park to wait out the storm? Did you feel comfortable in knowing inside Drover's was warm coffee, food, and socializing with your peers as long as you chose to stay? Drover's has been there many years for those that chose to stay.
Well, that may have all come to an end today. While we were working our way home for the holidays a couple of weeks ago, we stopped at Boomtown on our way east. Before hitting the slots we went in for a quick dinner and to wish friends (the Drover's staff) a happy holiday. The tone quickly turned sad as a favorite waitress of ours tearfully told us that management had called all of the staff into a meeting the day before. At that meeting they were told to save money the management had chosen to close Drover's for good and 12/31/06 would be they're last day. Only the fuel island and trucker's casino would remain open. They were offered to apply for positions across the street at the main casino if they so choose. As for the many truckers that for years counted on Drover's to be there, they would have to take the shuttle or walk to the main casino if they wanted to eat. It won't be the same in those restaurants as they are more geared towards the tourist crowd.Has anyone else heard the same?
I guess one can safely say "merry Christmas from the management!"
