Anyone using the computer in the truck to keep track of the log books? If so please comment on the posotives/negatives, inconvient to hook up printer, how often do you print them everyday, everyother, three days,/ less often.

How do you correct mistakes say you took an hour break but it kept you driving those kinds of things.

One more question, I was reading over the other day rules which I learn something new everytime I read the rules, last week I was held up because of ice, so I thought I was running my last half hour illegal but in fact you are given an extra two hours for cases like this. Was my understanding correct. So actually I was legal, and how could I log this or should I log this just make a notion ice in MD HWY at standstill I-95 MM

Thanks

I still use paper logs, but have a laptop with DDL loaded to do the math for me. The carrier I run for will accept DDL printed logs should I decide to get a printer for the truck. I could print them at home, but law requires that we be able to generate a print out on demand for DOT inspections.

Several years ago I worked for a company that allowed me to turn in DDL logs. I hauled containers between MI and Chicago, and was home every morning, so I turned in the logs every day. I used paper logs at work, then transfered it to DDL when I got home. When the company was audited, the DOT was most impressed with my logs. The DOT even used DDL to double check manual logs, and gave my company a copy to use themselves!

Nick, the creator of DDL has excellent info regarding computer generated logs. It would be best to check out his website for info on this. http://www.driversdailylog.com/

I heard this discussed on the Trucking Bozo show last week and the way I understood it logs must be printed and signed daily and your logs must be current to last change of duty status . As for additional driving time due to weather I believe that is only allowed if you would have reached your destination driving the legal number of hours . You can't use the weather to exceed legal hours enroute .

All of the above posts contained great content. One clarification on Scott's post. The rule is the "70 hour/8 day" rule (not 7 days).
Driver's Daily Log is a great program. I as a Safety Director first, and a recruiter second, really condone it's use. If a driver has a laptop and a printer, it is one of the best tools for a truck. (For the money, the laptop out performs any GPS system.) "DDL" really allows the driver to be fully aware of the hours he/she has available at any time. I've only used the older version which showed any future violation in yellow on the screen only, and listed the violations in the remarks section of the lower portion of the screen - before the driver would actually begin to violate the Hours of Service regulations. When printing the logs the program does not print the violations.
When auditing logs submitted by drivers who utilize DDL there is never any difficulty in reading the logs. Everything is neat and usually fully completed. A Safety Directors dream. Downside - drivers want to submit them by email, unprinted, unsigned which is not legal, and they now charge for the program for more than 4 drivers if I am not mistaken.
I've used the program in the past as my primary log auditing program.
I hope this helps.

You can excede the 11hour limit due to driving conditions. the run must not be longer than what you could have done under normal conditions. You must make a note in the remarks are what the problem was.
