There are an infinite number of ways you could set up a drivers pay. The two main ones are 1) driver pays for nothing and 2) driver pays for fuel and tolls. From what I've heard and researched, drivers that dont pay anything usually are paid between 28 and 35% of gross. Drivers that pay for fuel and tolls usually get between 45 and 55% of gross. Keep in mind that gross is TOTAL revenue to the truck. ( fuel surcharge, deadhead, empty moves, detention, bonused, layover and of course the pickup and delivery charge.) I hope this helps

Bret is absolutely correct about the two ways to pay drivers. Something that should be pointed out is that with the "driver pays fuel and tolls" scenario, you put the responsibility and expense for idling onto the drivers.

Something that i have never agreed with is the splitting of certain other revenue, such as driver load / unload pay (the driver did ALL the work), and, in the case of your drivers paying for fuel, any fuel surcharges, deadhead or empty move pay, since these monies are meant to offset the cost of the fuel used when doing them.

On the other hand, it's YOUR business equipment that is being kept idle, so i agree with a split for detention and layover pay. Pickup and Delivery are normal parts of the job, and the revenue for them should be split, also.

Best of luck to you and your wife!

Godspeed to all of you out there on the highways and byways!

thanks for the input. we were thinking of letting them pay for fuel and tolls at about 58-62%. depending on how long they were with us but our scenario was for fuel, tolls, ffuel taxes(since they decide where to fuel), and about 1.5% in there for health ins. but since nothing is started up yet we were just trying to get an idea. this is just the planning stage right now but i appreciated your views, thx.:)

Having a driver pay for fuel and tolls is an excellent way to go, especialy when you have inexperienced drivers. With the driver footing the bill, runs will be chose more carefully from a profitibility perspective, as well as less ideling time on the engine and slower speeds for fuel mileage. ( this all adds up to less engine hours on truck)
