I didn't say accept, I said get a grip. Reading the rules is easy, practicing them is a different thing.

Let me clarify it.

There are people out there who don't get how the HOS works, they can read the rules, but don't get the math behind it. 11 hours junk is not as simple as it can be, and neither is the 14 hours junk because of the 34 hour reset and the 6/60 or 7/70 rule.

Not calling anyone a dummy or stupid because they can't figure out how to work the rules, but there is a need for many to get with EOBRs and stick to them and others who know how to work the system to not be on EOBRs. I am not saying to operate illegally, but to operate smart.

Also HOS can get confusing because you can actually drive for more than 11 hours in some circumstances, or if you are within 100 miles from your terminal then the 14 hour rule comes into effect for local drivers.
Anyways, the OP was in a van and unless he has haz-mat it's a moot point:D

Not all CDL holders have had to deal with the hours of service either. I drove school bus for several years, which is how I got the CDL. I knew nothing about the hours of service. May have known it long enough to pass a written test at time of CDL licensing, if it was a question on the test, I don't recall.

So in my opinion it is not obvious someone who has a CDL knows about the ours of service.

Patperkins: some of the time I drove cargo van was with a codriver, several of whom were total strangers. [And only one I swore I'd never go with again, lol.] We wanted to make it as fair as possible, which gets complicated when you have no idea of when the driving begins each day, or how long it lasts. the very best way we found was 6 hr shifts: 6am to noon, noon to 6pm, 6pm to midnight, etc.
It allows each driver to do part [but not all] of the day and night, and to rest when they know they won't be driving.
We handled the irregular shifts [when leaving at 4 pm, for example] by dividing the time till the next shift [midnight] in half, adding half to each shift: 4p to 8p, other driver does 8p to midnight, then back to 6-12-6-12.
It worked very well - neither driver felt they were getting the worst of the deal most of the time. :)

To quote a wise man: no need to complicate the simple. The 34 hr restart is as simple as it gets: take 34 hrs off, start over at zero.
The 6/60 or 7/70 is simple too: pick one or the other, forget about the one you don't use.

It's so easy, an innumerate person [that's the numerical equivalent of illiterate, lol] can do it. Even me. :D

When I was at home I needed 8 hours of sleep and I planned for that. Now that I am older is seems as if 6 hours of sleep fits me better maybe because I am doing less manual work while on the road.

I alway heard that older people sleep less, and as I get older I am beginning to believe that, there was a time I could sleep 10 hours, not anymore
