I sometimes wonder if these tellers of tall tales regard it as an art form and source of entertainment, both for the teller and listener.

I read once where mountain men of an earlier time in American history would occasionally gather and when they did, many tall tales were told. The truth of the story was less important than the interest others showed in it.

In trucking, the tales are easily manufactured and told because, as with the mountain men, no one else is around to validate the facts of the case.

I always listen, hoping to hear something new. But when it gets to "federal marshals closing the chicken coops", I usually loose all interest.

I have had that. Not that dramatic but I did have orders to run the scales and the one in al followed me and instructed me to pull over but they didn't know I had the dodge van behing me was a Leo escort. No guns were drawn but that would make my story more interesting.

I did it twice before: sitting in a both with my back to a group of loud truckers, kind of minding my own business with my head down. setting the cell phone alarm clock to a few seconds, and answering it when it rings. speaking quietly with a well practiced Mediterranean accent.
"Ahalan ao sahalan, ya Mohammad, how you been?"
"wallah, ensha'allah"
"Shocran"
"hey, yah Mohammad, adish El Seah?"
"NAh!"
"NO, the red wire goes to the detonator"
"how much did we paid for it?"
"Wallah, that's a good price"
"did you get it from that guy in the iron range"
"liquid ?, why liquid?, he was supposed to give us the good stuff!"
"o'h well, ...yes, it will work too"
"when your flight lives?"
- normally at that point the restaurant is so quite you can hear a fork falling...
- i can go forever...

It is funny, but be careful Moose. You may run into someone who takes your conversation seriously and calls it in. Some truckers (including expediters) are trained to do exactly that. They even carry hotline numbers in their trucks to which to call and report a suspicious conversation like the one you describe.

Exactly Phil, it's a pay back for all those stupid programs like HWY watch, 1st observer, amber alert & TAT.
did anyone else noticed that constructions signs on the I.N toll road?, we are mind controlled and reeducated using scare tactics.

First it was they had a new international, then it turned into a 78 kw cabover, then they had to sell it to pay for her treatments etc... then they won the lotto and bought a fleet of trucks and by the third day it was they were part owners in a new trucking company. The worse part was they had the same outfits on all three days .

OMG ...I think i met this nutjob, or a twin of hers...iraq war vet, who won the lotto 2x, getting cancer trearment while on the road(always delivering on time-drive through chemo?)...what a freak show, i was just trying to get a bite to eat....obv mentally ill, but had a nice rig, said he owns a fleet she bought with her lotto winnings...what a hard worker with only a year to live

Never heard the military angle from a driver at least not in that manner. Always love the lotto stories, just ask where there money is and its ; gambling, the ex took it or the gave it all to charity....

It really depends to me...like Ateam mentioned some stories are purely intended to entertain. Both of my grandpa's where great tellers of tall tales, but they where obviously meant for entertainment.
Those who feel the need to always exaggerate their social status, finances, where they live or drive, etc are typically suffering from at least low self esteem and in the worse cases of habitual lying most likely have mental health issues. While annoying I feel sorry for them in that they crave attention, feel so down on themselves and are obviously lacking something in their life.
Though I've come across the worse offenders who make it hard to remember that they obviously have issues....you know the ones who not only feel the need to lie (in the positive) about their life but want to to lie (in the negative) about your life. Those people are quickly dropped from my life before their issues effect me!
