One of the best things you can do at your home to document and protect your belongings is to do an inventory. One of the best ways to do it is by video. Having been in the insurance industry in a prior lifetime here's the suggested method.
WARNING this requires some effort, just like properly using this forum, so if you aren't willing to put in the time and effort this won't work.
You need a camcorder and a brand new tape for it. You start out in the street in front of the house taking a wide shot of the entire property. Then you zoom in to the house number on the mailbox or curb or house front or wherever it is. DO NOT TURN OFF THE RECORDER UNTIL FINISHED WITH THE ENTIRE HOUSE. This is very important because if it becomes necessary an expert can testify the tape was never stopped or spliced.
From the front, walk in the front door and begin going room to room. On expensive items like a big screen tv or whatever have a small piece of paper taped to it with make, model and serial number. Zoom in on that paper when you pan to that item. If you still have the receipt use that. Have any silver or crystal etc. out on the cabinets to zoom in on. Have all expensive jewelry laid out on the bed. Have other small expensive items laid out on the bed or sofa or somewhere. Make your way through every room including bathrooms. Finish by going out the garage and then circling the house front to back and around the other side to the front again.
When you have finished break the write protect tab off the tape so it can't be recorded to again. Keep the tape outside the house somewhere safe, perhaps in your truck or at a relative's house. DO NOT KEEP IT IN THE HOUSE EVEN IF IT'S IN A LOCKBOX ETC. The reason is because you don't want the tape destroyed by fire or flood and you don't want it stolen. If those things happen to it while it's somewhere else you make a new one. If it happens at your house your potentially most valuable possession is gone along with everything else.
