Did you get a letter in the mail

I got a letter in the mail from a company I won't name (because they have a banner on EO). This company is not a expediting company and wants people to lease there truck on with them, then to lease on to one of three carriers. Now I have never applied to this company, but how did they get my home address? Giving out someone info or selling someones info is breaking the law. I would like to know if others got the same letter in the mail?

I did not get one but selling of information is not against the law. Maybe it should be, it does cause a lot of problems but it is very legal right now. It is a major industry.

I went to Kevin Rutherford's site once to look at a spreadsheet he had done. The link sent you to another site where you had to register to be able to use the spreadsheet (it was just Excel but you couldn't save it).

I used a new never before used e-mail address when I did so...within days that account was being flooded by at least a dozen spam e-mails a day from things not related to trucking or the US for that matter.

Lots of ways to make money on the internet, selling your information, browsing habits, things you have clicked on etc. If you don't have a good Spyware and memory cleaner on your computer you are handing all this stuff over every day.

What I do when I get letters like that is, if the come with a postage paid return envelope, I shred their garbage and add a few washers and mail it back they have to pay for the weight,Phone calls are another one where Iplay their game, had a guy call me one day, he's gonna be in the area giving a estimate for basement waterproofing, and would like to stop by and give me one too...told him great! stop by.....I live in a Ranch Home as does everyone in my neighborhood.

Indirectly related. We were getting 30-50 calls a day from telemarketers and fax machines. In the outgoing message I recorded the doo-da-dee, disconnected line tone (SIT) then added the usual "call me later" message. This tells the autodialer that the line is disconnected, so you may get removed from their calling list. My phone only gets about five calls a day now. It helps to have caller id. If you recognize the number, you can answer the call. If you don't recognize the number, let the answering machine screen the call and do its thing.

Bruno, could also be that your state DMV sold your name. I don't own a boat but get all kinds of boat catalogs. I do own a canoe, which Minnesota considers a watercraft and must be licensed with the state DNR. I'm sure they sold my name.

This is interesting. Another hand in the pie. Does this company list any advantages for leasing to them and they in turn lease to a carrier?

This kind of thing always cracks me up. If you don't want the stuff just throw it away. People spend more time getting upset and complaining about it than it takes to just pitch it in the trash or delete in the case of an email. People have been buying info and sending offers for decades. I have yet to have a sniper setup down the street because he bought my name off a list broker.

My personal feeling is, big deal it keeps some people employed.

I never find wasting someones who is trying to earn a living humorous. All it would take is when they call saying I am not interested please remove me from your list. That would be like someone calling who you dropped a business card off with one day and saying they have a load can you run by and grab it, then you get there and they were just joking around.

Have you ever had your Idenity stolen? It's not fun to deal with. It can cost you thousands of dollars. So it is a big deal.

I sure do! They initiated the call, not me. I ask questions, get a little weird and after about 10 minutes they hang up on me. I have had several telemarketers realize I was jerking them around (in a fun and weird way) and tell me that they enjoyed talking with me.

Once I had a woman call selling magazines. We talked for about 30 minutes. I had her repeat her list of magazines over and over. I asked about magazine titles I made up. She would go down her list looking for them. Eventually I got bored and told her I really wasn't interested. Two minutes later her supervisor called me swearing and cussing about wasting her time.

I saw two Mormon guys working the neighborhood so I was ready for them when they hit my door. I donned my wife's white bathrobe, some safety glasses with side shields, a calculator and grabbed a Pyrex measuring cup. Our little rat terrier had just come from the vet after being spayed. She was still half in the bag from the anesthesia and could hardly walk.

The two of us answered the door and listened to their speech. I explained that I was a Christian Scientist and the world could be saved through chemistry. I used my dog as an example. Calling her Fangor and telling them that prior to a little chemical còcktail she had been a vicious attack dog and not the docile little puppy that was before them. I continued with the science and experiment theme until they left.

Don't get mad, get weird.

Moot,

Ya know, when I saw the title of this thread and that you had posted in here .... well, I just kinda figgered ..... you know .... that perhaps Safety still hadn't picked up .... but that mebbe they did send you a postcard or something:

"Dear Moot,

We are sorry to hear of your recent encounter with Bambi ..... we would have liked to take your call, but unfortunately we are extremely busy at present - what with having to make sure drivers, who are sitting at either the shipper or consignee, are "ready to roll" at least 4 or 5 hours before their protect times, and making sure that those drivers who have apparently been stopped (for some reason or another, unknown to us) for several hours while under load (with their ignitions off), know that they they will absolutely need to take a break by XX:XX ....

Perhaps you could send us a letter detailing the matter you were calling about, and your concerns, we could try to work it into the schedule ...."

I did get off the safety hold and was loaded the following morning. Maybe my long on hold time was penance for years of messing with telemarketers and Mormons.

Enjoy the Laredo sunshine. It's cold and raining in Chicago. At least it is not snowing, yet.

Note to self.. do NOT read Moot's posts while drinking Diet Pepsi... it burns the nose, and is hard to clean off a keyboard.

The people stealing an identity are not the ones buying lists etc. They do not do things in a legitimate manner. It's the person behind the counter or on the phone making eight bucks an hour you hand your card to or read it over the phone. Or the person hacking into computer systems, swiping your mail, running a scanner over your pocket while in line behind you and things like that. I can understand having that happen could make a person jumpy but those people are not going to bother with purchasing a list from a legitimate business. They can get the plenty of names and addresses out of a phone book it that is what they want and it doesn't leave something to trace.
