Diabetes and expedited rules

Help!!
I've just recently lost my DOT medical due to having to start insulin injections. I'm just now starting to look for another way to stay in the trucking industry and am quite interested in checking out expedited trucking. The way I understand it is, that I don't need the medical card unless a DOT physical is required by the employer. I know I can't operate a big truck until I get a waiver from FMCSA, but that really takes awhile. I am looking for this info to get into a straight truck or a cargo van if thats all I can operate as a diabetic. If anyone out there can give me a little friendly advice and possibly point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. I don't have the $$ to go into this as an O/O yet. Any good companies to start out with as an employee driver??

Because of insurance requirements, just about every carrier requires you to pass a physical. You will need a specific waiver before a company will likely sign you on. They are obtainable, but takes alittle time.

This raises an issue that I'm not too familiar with, I'm curious are there any current O/O's on our forums that are diabetic and who run without much restriction?

Thanx for the responses to my diabetes ? I too would like to hear from other O/O's on this subject. The further I dig into this the more confused I get. Is it carriers rules generally that require the DOT med card or is it the DOT? If anyone knows of fleet owners who don't require this, let me know.

The requirements are a DOT federal regulation. It is also required by the insurance company who provides coverage usually through the carrier.

Have you thought about driving something under 26,100 for a local trucking/expedite company? Most of the ones I've run into do not require a CDL. Before I bought my van I had several offers to drive various vehicles, all under the 26,100 and not coupeled vehichles. I'm guessing the main reason the major carriers require the CDL class C for the vans is because they want you to have the H endorsement. You can't get the H endorsement without a CDL. As an added benefit, the major carriers get the Hazmat background check done on all the drivers, certainly a good business decision on their part.

I called the BMV in TN to see where I could renew my class A CDL and was told that I had to have a current medical card to renew.
